Just this weekend, I had removed the fuel tank from the '81 R65 to do the drain, flush n' dry service. Really pleased to see the OEM tank liner in fine fettle.
A very small amount of water in the non-petcock, right side of the tank and a little bit of debris was drained out. Didn't take long for the remaining moisture to be evaporated from the black fuel tank as it sat on the deck in 103 degree Texas heat.
So what's this to do with LED turn signals?
With the tank off, I was reminded of the replacement turn signal flasher I installed after having placed small, streamlined LED lamps on the sport fairing. Rear signals are conventional-bulbed OEMs but on much shortened stalks. Rather than mess with fitting in-line resistors for the front LEDs, I stopped by my FLAPS and purchased a turn signal flasher relay that is used on so many of today's automobiles due to the manufacturer's love affair with LED turn sigs on all four corners.
Plug n' play. Simple deal.

Tank and fuel filter debris accumulated over 2-3 years.
No loose tank liner material found.

It is a good thing the petcock screens work as well as they do, even with an added in line filter.
For northern bikes, I try to drain them completely and rinse them out thoroughly every year or two. We get plenty more moisture up here and the likelihood of it working its evil magic during the long winter layovers is even worse.

My Karcoma petcock may have been 'modified' sometime during it's life as there are no screens over the straws. The straws are of some sorta plastic.
Related: Once in the wayback days, I was fabbing a fiberglass, in-wing fuel tank for an aircraft and needed a primary filter to catch the big junk. Borrowed my wife's stainless steel tea strainer thingy and bonded the mesh portion over the drop sump inside the tank. My story was that I had no idea where her kitchen tool got off to.

I believe that Hans Lowe at BMW Hucky has the screens for the petcocks.

There were no screens over the intake tubes on the bikes with the Germa fuel taps .
My '81 never had them and I'm the only owner .

The Germa has a small screen in the bottom of the fuel tap with the hose barb. Still helps keep stuff from the carbs, but the crud can build up inside the passageways of the tap and cause problems, and the small screen can clog up much more quickly by the looks of things.
The 7 hole disc of the Germa is also a little tougher to source for a rebuild, too. Mine's become bench art and a Karcoma now adorns the tank.
