...at least I think it has something to do with the pushrod.
On every other bike I've ever owned, the engagement/disengagement point seemed to be where the clutch lever was not too far from the hand grip (even on my old slash 5).
But on my R65, the engagement point seems to be considerably further out from the handgrip. I initially thought that I'd just get used to it. But it hasn't been working out that way.
Is there something in the innards that can be adjusted to deal with this issue? (I'm quite sure that it couldn't be done with the lock-nut on the big lever behind the gearbox, since it simply seems to match the effects of adjusting the other big lever up on the handlebar).

I made a post recently about clutch adjustment that quite a few people chimed in on that may be useful.
I'm guessing that you just need a proper clutch adjustment. Make sure that you have 8in (or 201mm) from the ball on the adjustment arm to the transmission. Adjust that distance on the bar.
Once that's set, go down to the adjustment bolt on the back of the transmission and adjust that so you get about 2mm of free play at the bar.

Good luck!
In my case, there was something wrong with the innards. Bearings were missing so free play couldn't be achieved. You could have a situation where your bearings have failed and need to be replaced...

Sometimes the simplest solutions elude me. I previously had about 4mm's of free play on the hand lever. So I thought I had better get it to the 2mm spec and see if that helped. Nope. It just made it worse. So now I've got it at 6mm's and it seems just perfect. I guess I've just gone through life with really loose levers and became adapted to them.
The big arm down below is roughly perpendicular to the axis of the bike, so that should be OK.
