Title: sheared oil filter cover bolt
Post by: jamestnewsonr65 on June 23, 2014, 10:05:52 AM
Whilst changing the oil filter on my r65LS one of the bolts sheared off. Luckily I was able to use a pair of pliers to get the piece out, but I need to replace the bolt.

Does anyone know what size this bolt is from memory?

Thanks

Well they are M6 for sure but I couldn't be certain about length without taking one out. They are quite short though I'd guess 20 - 25mm.

Thanks for the response.
I am away from the bike this week and was hoping to get another on order before I returned.

I will see if I can get the girlfriend to remove one of the existing ones and measure the length for me, but 20-25 seems about right from memory.

Thanks and this forum has been very helpful.

M6x20 is the size according to Max BMW's parts fiche.  Most nuts and bolts in the fiche have size indicated.

The bolt was superceded... maybe they changed the plating.

I see that someone else has supplied you with the correct size for the bolt. I wanted to share with you the words in the service manual for my early 70s Bultaco Metrella:- "Please do not enter into a contest of wills with the nuts and bolts of this motorcycle, they are after all, only steel". I am very glad that you were able to extract the broken bit without having to resort to more heroic devices than a pair of pliers.

I like that.

I think James was fortunate to have sheared the bolt without stripping the thread. Those bolts don't need to be  very tight at all and if the plate doesn't snug up without applying significant force it means there is something wrong with the spacing or assembly.

There is a time and place for using substantial force. I will changing the exhaust on my car tonight and I strongly suspect there might be a contest of wills involved.

Great little quote.
It is amazing how a tiny piece of metal can either make a job go incredibly easy or become a right pain in the ar*e.

Thanks for the correct size of bolt.
