Just want to quickly verify a part as I can't seem to find a picture. Does the OEM exhaust clamp have a 38 stamped on it?
Mine doesn't seem to hold down after completely tightened and my new cheap aftermarket mufflers keep rattling backwards. I was thinking of ordering a new one from Max, but there is no picture and don't want to order the same one I have.

Exhaust pipe size for R45/R65's is 35mm
38mm is the size most often used on other airheads. You may have 38mm mufflers although sometimes they provide a sleeve to match smaller pipes.
Not sure what it says on my clamps but I can have a look when I get home.

Aha! That would make sense. Complete lack of me referencing previous posts.... (sorry Monte - forgive my laziness this one time).
I'll order the ones off the fiche.
Thanks Barry

Hang on I've just checked mine and they also say 38. It must refer to the outside diameter of the muffler and not the size of exhaust pipe the muffler is designed to fit.
My clamps are stainless and almost certainly the original ones if that helps identify what you have.

I recently bought a pair of clamps from Max($18 each!). I can snap a picture if you'd like.

A pic would be great. Just can't seem to get them to snug down on these aftermarket pipes.

If memory serves, I think the "38" is the maximum useable diameter, in millimeters, that the clamp screw will support. I have an extra clamp which I ordered that turned out to be too big.
I do like the BMW OEM-style clamps. Don't like seeing radiator hose clamps on motorcycle exhaust systems. Especially on our Airheads.

A shade tree solution to the too large clamps is to cut shims from an empty aluminum can of barley juice. Easy to do with metal shears and the preparation of raw materials can also be satisfying. [smiley=beerchug.gif]
