Title: sidestand question
Post by: apaiva on April 15, 2014, 11:11:53 AM
Hey guys.  So my bike only has a center stand on it so I bought a sidestand I found on ebay.  I just bought one of the stock ones, not the Brown/Surefoot/etc. because honestly I am planning to sell the bike this spring and didn't want to spend 140$ on it.
So the stand I bought is this type http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/Diagrams/B0000922.png?v=04302013
I didn't realize there are two types and it seems my bike has the little tab on the frame that would accept this other type http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/Diagrams/B0000949.png?v=04302013

I can't tell from the fiche, how does the first type actually mount to the frame?  Is there an attachment piece that my bike does not have because it's designed only for the second type of stand?
Can I just use the arm that I bought, and order parts 3,4,5,6,7 from the second linked diagram?

It's an 81 R65 by the way.
Thank you.

The stand you bought is for the 78 -79 model and fits onto a frame lug with no use of tools or fasteners. The pin #3 is held in position when the cover #5 slides over it.  A clever design in terms of the mounting but still a poor stand as it's mounted too far forward.

From what I've heard the later model frame lug is different.

oh, well darn.
do you know if the arm is different so that I could use the small parts (3-7) available from MAX rather than shop for a complete new sidestand?

I honestly don't know. I think you'd need to have both stands in your hand to figure it out. Beats me why they changed it so often.
