Title: 1983 R65 Exhaust Questions
Post by: tc80211 on April 14, 2014, 01:59:34 PM
Hey Guys,

My build is coming along. I am turning my attention to pipes as mine pretty much had rust on every square inch, I need to replace both headers and mufflers...

Been doing some searching and the 35mm diameter does not seem prevalent whereas the larger 38mm (for R100's) appear to be everywhere... I would love to find a decent used header pipe, since im going to wrap it I dont care about the finish. Any spots other than ebay to check, which seems to contain the rusty mess of headers?

Mufflers are a bit easier, just going for a used set of whispertones for now. Maybe something a little more trick in future but my GS750 already provides enough noise headache for now.

Has anyone tried MAC headers? Maybe there is another company that makes a decent 3rd party? I see the BMW OEM replacements are quite pricey so would prefer to avoid that route, if possible.

You pretty much have three choices for the R65 headers: BMW OEM, MAC and eBay. The market is small for the R45.65 headers hence the lack of aftermarket resources.

I just checked out the Keihan site and almost ordered on the spot! OOPs those are Pounds and not dollars........... still a full stainless exhaust system for under a $1000 shipped is not too bad If it had been in dollars, it would have been in the mail already!!

I got whatever stainless ones Motobins sells.  They're nice.  I think they are cheaper than OEM.

Don't know about laws regarding motorcycle exhaust system approval and noise level limits outta the US of A, and Texas, but with all the Hardley-Ablesomes ripping straight pipes in my AO, the Airheads running roarty Dunstall Peashooter repops never get a look nor a listen from Johnny Law.

I have yet to find one, have been on line searching and found nothing. If anyone knows of a pipe bender in Southern Ca. Post up his contact, please....... nice little under seat stainless work would be slick

I second this. I can ask some cretins on Thursday if that would help.

How much slop you can get away with in the exhaust system?  35mm is .075mm (or roughly 3 thou) less than 1-3/8"  That might open up some possibilities... at least for mufflers.

That might be worth looking into when I need replacements.  Stainless exhausts are expensive.  Silencers I can understand as there is fabrication involved.  I've never understood the price of pipes though. Crossover aside it's just a length of stainless tube bent to shape. How hard can that be when you have the bending gear.  35mm stainless exhaust tube cost less than £12/M

we had a guy called george who ran raven racing in sheffield for a few years , moved down south about 4/5 years ago (woman!) used to make his own systems dunno if hes still doing it ( the pipes not the woman!) if the clowns on 'american chopper' can do it dont know why we cant . the reason they are so expensive , is they charge as much as the market will allow i.e. as much as they can ! thats why i started doing my own spraying , even setting up was cheaper than a 'pro' paint job .
