Hello
Due to buying a few too many bikes last year i had to decide to thin out the flock, and unfortunately my red r65 went.
The fella that bought it rode it from mine to somewhere south of London, he did about 350 miles in a day on it, it ran fine loads of power and was charging perfectly.
However the exhaust had become slightly loose so the day after he took it to a BMW dealer who were quite excited by it so they slapped it on a ramp and balanced the carbs tweaking the idle mixture.
He's ridden it for about 3 days after (only about 100 miles a day) and it's not well.
it's lost all power, at about 3500 revs he has to change up or it bogs down, and now it's developed a hell of a knocking noise on the left cylinder, i've only heard it over the phone but it's loud and has cut out on him a few times.
My first thought was valve slap, any thoughts??
Thanks

First, confirm valve lash is to specification.

You forgot step 1a. Apply cold beer.
I'd go back to the dealer and tell them to try again. Maybe even on level ground. Once the carbs are out of whack, you're going to hear lots of strange sounds. It's the classic troubleshooting technique: "My <widget> is <verbing>." "Well, was what the last thing you did to it?"
-
think he's gone back to the dealers with a few choice words!!!
I've said i'll go down in a week to strip the rocker cover off and maybe the head if needed.
I reckon it's gonna be a valve issue
Thanks

Turns out it had lost all but 500mm of oil and it threw a conrod bearing!!
-
How on earth could it have gone through all that oil and not been noticed?!? :(
-
Did they replace an oil filter at the dealer / shop ????????
-
Does /did the low oil pressure light ever come on ???
With that little bit of oil, it should have been on for some time .
-
now then
been busy for a while!!
They've cut all the electrics off the bike so no warnings!!
I've got the engine on the bench to rebuild for him now!!
Hope alls well

Can you say $2,000 o-ring???????

Can you say $2,000 o-ring???????
if that was the cause it would certainly make the 2k o-ring a bit more "real"
Has a filter cover gasket magically appeared since you sold the bike?
-
Not too sure whats gone on with it, gaskets are present.
Don't know if they've done an oil change on it at the garage and forgot to fill it properly, it doesn't seem too bad though
-
Out of curiosity, does anybody know how much oil would be in the sump if you checked the dipstick with it screwed in?
-
No but it wouldn't be hard to estimate by comparing the length of thread with the min and max marks. Oil volume between min and max marks is 0.85 L
-
Dragging up an old thread.
i stripped the engine, after he'd had it at a bmw dealer for the carbs balanced and a check over.
It has no oil in it, and a ruined crankshaft, it's really cooked it!
I lent him my spare engine to put him on, but with the repair this needs i might as well work on this and put a new crank in.

Any recourse with the shop that worked on the bike last ????

Not sure, waiting for Olly to come back from the states and dig out the invoice.
