Just noticed the plug next to the oil cap is missing. No idea how long it's been like that. Anywhere from 30 to 300 miles roughly. Looking at the parts list I believe it is called the "timing plug". Only cost .80cents from what I can tell but my questions are:
-on a scale of 1-10 should I ride it before I get the replacement plug?
-if I have to ride it what is the best option?
Leave open, plug with small cloth or rag, tape over hole, any other suggestions

Nothing stopping you from riding it. It just there to show you your timing marks on the flywheel.
Get a plug on order slow time. And forget about it till it arrives.

I agree, I'd just ride it. If you are worried about heavy rain and water getting in I'd clean up the area and put some duct tape over it.
The part of the rubber that inserts into the hole is fairly shallow and I'm surprised they don't fall out more often. I usually go around the edge with a flat bladed screw driver to make sure it's fully eased into the hole.

Don't stick anything in the hole though. Wouldn't want it to get caught up in the flywheel.

Duct tape. Gaffer's tape. Even branded as Duck Tape by one supplier. I've never tried it on our local duck population but the tape has inspired a commonly heard DIY phrase:
"If you can't fix it, Duck it."

I have a few extras, if you're in the Downtown / Old Town area this weekend, PM me and drop by, you can have one. I also use the timing hole plugs in the rear (side) luggage racks, there's a couple of holes with the same diameter as the timing hole in the engine case. They do a great job of snugging up the fit on the rear bags when installed in addition to serving as a good way to carry extras if you ever lose one on the engine case, which has never happened yet.

thanks for the offer Mike, since it is not big deal I'll just order a couple online. I'm not that connected to all the happenings. Wasn't aware of the tech day this weekend. When and where or where do I look to see info on tech days?
I've got kid duty Saturday and going on a ride Sunday with a shop in North County. Seaweed and gravel in leucadia. All are invited. Route is TBD, starts at 11AM.
Last time there were about 25 bikes and we all rode to Ramona for lunch. Everything from Harleys to Triumphs to KLR650s enduros. REally fun day. Would love to meet one day as you have been very helpful over the years.
