Hey guys,
Will a '79 R65 tank fit on my '83 R65 LS?
-
AFAIK all R45/R65 tanks 79 to 84 are the same. Seats, rear sub frame and under seat storage do differ between early and later models. Check the online parts fiches and I think you'll find the same part numbers for an LS and early R65 tank.

I think the tunnel is different on the "1st" gen & the "2nd" generation bikes, due to the different layout of the electrics between the two.
I could be wrong.

Barry not so I am afraid.
A 81 and later tank will fit a 79/80, but not the other way around. It is due to the differently shaped pressing on the underside of the tank to clear the the ignition trigger and other additional electronics on the post 81 bikes. I did once consider a "lump of timber and house brick" method of adjustment, but happily I was able to locate a better tank that fitted my 85 twin shock.

...mm so what that amounts to is that the current spare part is a later tank because it fits both.
Shows you can't altogether trust the on line fiche part numbers as they show the "current spare" which is not necessarily the same as the original part.
