I know this has been discussed in the past, but I can't seem to find it. What size muffler fits the R65? Anyone have any experience with where to find a good selection on the net? Thinking of some reverse cone mufflers like on montmil's bike. I also would like something a little more up swept. I think I remember those being EMGO, but not 100% sure. Damn search function!

The header outside diameters are 38mm, I believe. The headers on the larger R80/R100 airheads are 40mm. Depending on the muffler's tip, one could fabricate some spacers from some thin aluminum stock to avoid leaks at the joint.

The EMGO Dunstall-looking Peashooter repops do not require shimming on the R65 as the muff-to-header pipe joint is 38mm right outta the box.
Some of the EMGO mufflers do need a shim but they usually come with a "snail twist" shim thing that makes the install easier. This was the case on Bengt Phorqs "new" Bonneville with EMGOs. The supplied shim thing made the job much neater.

R65 headers are 35mm.
Other airheads are either 38mm or 40mm so I would have thought that any airhead mufflers that are not R65 specific will need shimming.

Regarding the Bonneville muffs, yes the shims made it easier to mount. The Emgos I installed on the R90/6 were simply plug and play, no shimming required. Good muffs at a decent price. I'm not sure about the diameter just now.

Thanks for the replies. My current exhaust is already a repop. Didn't realize that when I bought it, but it's been a learning process. Any recs for a reputable vendor?

I can vouch for the Keihan SS exhausts from Motorworks. A PO fitted them to my bike in April 95 and they are still looking great. You'll find them on this page ( last item a pair of 35mm, or go to next page for singles).

Mind you their has been some inflation since 1995, my bike came with a whole bunch of old (handwritten) receipts from Motoroworks, for parts, and the pair of silencers were UK£161.71 (Ex VAT) in 1995, now UK£272.50(Ex VAT), that's a 68% increase!
Mind you, you can pay more, I like the name of these ones though not the price!:

I refrained myself to make a lousy comment about choosing Keyhan silencers... but, now I can :D
I have a set of keyhan stainless muffler from them and a couple of years later I bought the pipes from them.
As far as I can tell it was in 94 or 95 that I bought the mufflers. and they look like new !
No wonder why they offered 10 years warranty !
If I where you, I'll go for keyhan stainless !

I bought Sito chrome silensers and the rust was showing after a few months. I wish I had bought Keihan instead.

I have SS Keihans on my 79. Surprisingly noisy. Not as I would expect from a BMW!
