Is it possible to dissect my old but original spark plug wires and reuse the metal 5k Ohm spark plug caps but with a fresh set of hi tension wires?
I'm just worried that once i dig right into it I might do something stupidly irreversible.

If you are talking about the metal-covered ones, when you pull the metal off, you will find the wire is part of the cap - i.e. molded rubber, one piece.
If this is what you have save the tips that go into the coil (de-solder) and use them on your new wires.
Get solid core copper and NGK caps.

Humm ,
I switched back to original caps because I was tired to replace NGK 5K Ohm caps. I had misfiring after a few hundred km and upon testing found the cap had "a problem" and let one spark in 10 or 50 pass ...
I paid 3 time the price of OEM wires in NGK caps...
I've seen somewhere metal caps identical to the OEM one but easy to assemble. Can't remember where ...

Could it have been Beru. They are available in 1K Ohm and 5K Ohm versions and cost 5 -6 Euros. Article here on rebuilding Beru caps http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/PlugCapsnCoils.htm#Beru%20Spark%20Plug%20Cap%20Rebuild:

Fitted NGK caps and have never had a problem over several thousand miles. All at a fraction of the cost of the oems. If you are worried just keep a couple in your tool kit. I have never used mine just let others use them when they get stuck on the side of the road. :)

I've a pair of the original cap plugs in the shed if you want a spare set to test with.
I swapped them when i fit an electric ignition, came with dyna coil and NGK's, they work perfect!
All the best

For those in the UK
Points ignition bikes should have 1000 ohm caps. Although 5000 ohm caps seem to work if you really want 1000 ohm caps, you won't find NGK caps easily in the UK. At at least I can't even though they seem to be commonly available else where. The 1000 ohm Beru caps are available and at low cost. It must be the BMW supplied Beru caps with integral HT lead that are expensive.

Thanks for the offer, but no need Mr.E. I already have a set of the original caps here. They're still working, but the wires have gone a little crunchy.
I was just actually wondering if it could be done since I'm aiming at the all original look. But with Barry's post about the rebuild able Beru's, I think I'll just get a set of those instead of chopping the oem ones.

My NGK 1K ohm caps work just fine. Solid copper wire from Rick at http://www.motoelekt.com/
