Here's a shot of the splines on my final drive:

Not good, eh? I have a line on a complete final drive for $50, here's a picture he sent me of those splines:
(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1350.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp763%2Facarey3%2FBMWfinaldrive002_zps2f097182.jpg&hash=15517a59a0cb1288207361b770d54fed1dbc5704) (http://s1350.photobucket.com/user/acarey3/media/BMWfinaldrive002_zps2f097182.jpg.html)
Obviously better, but worth $50 plus shipping? The seller has a parts bike, other parts he's sent me from the same bike have been in pretty good condition. My other options would be considerably more expensive, no?
-
Toast. That's what your splines are.
The $50.00 price sounds very fair, especially if it's for the entire final drive. With the complete final drive in hand, it should not be necessary to go through the entire "shimming process" when installing a nonmatched driveside spline.
You'll still need to deal with the wheel hub splines, but you're a good step closer.
-
Thanks Monte, more or less what I was hoping to hear. 8-)
I'll get a pic of the wheel splines. They're not as bad as the drive, I'm hoping good enough to live with.
-
I had a hard time getting a good shot of the rear wheel splines, but they look better than the drive:

Does that look safe enough to live with?
-
You might try cleaning them first for a better inspection and online diagnosis! ::)
-
Awww, do I hafta? :D
-
Yes you do, Al. If they show as OK, you'll still need to invest in a tube of Honda Moly 60 to grease the splines before returning 'em to service.
Dig out any packed in grease way down in the lower regions. Most folks over grease the splines and it appeaqrs your PO did, too. Pipe cleaners are useful.
-
ok Monte, you shamed me into it. :-[ I'll have to get some pipe cleaners to finish, but this is clearer

To my eye, it looks like it's good for a few more miles. What say you?
-
As grandpa used to sat, "That dog'll hunt."
But do clean both splines reaaly well. Grit is not your friend.
-
Will do. Thanks for your help.
-
Monte's right - keep those splines clean! Rule of thumb is to clean and re-grease at each tire change.
I don't know if it was made really clear why it's so important to keep them clean. It's because the metal particles rubbed off of those teeth stay right there in the old grease. After a while the stuff makes pretty good grinding compound - not a desirable item in that location! ;)
-
Huh. My earlier reply -#8- would fail freshman spelling. Was using a "found" PC sourced in the condo we were enjoying while on the warm -as in 80 degrees- and sunny Texas coast. Some of the keyboard elements were Neg Function.
That's my story. ::)
-
Seems like more of a cerveza function and not a keyboard neg function. :D
Enjoy the sun and the sand!
-
Ah, Monte. You're such a swell guy - saying that so us poor 'winterized' boobs up here in the cold and miserable north don't feel so bad. Or was the intended effect the opposite...?
-
Could be worse. Might have run outta beer!
