With many members placing their motorcycles into winter hibernation, those still riding and folks considering buying new batteries; Snowbum has updated his section on batteries.
Weathered in or not, good info that did help me with the new battery in my R100S. Just did an easy 6-month maintenance check and I'm grateful for da 'Bums help when I first installed the unit.

With the cost of generic AGM batteries these days, I wouldn't even consider a flooded type battery, unless the battery 'died' on the road on a trip .
The tip of leaving the battery in the cold on a float charger is a good one, cold is a batteries best friend, as long as it's not discharged .
The battery available from Staab battery, the UB12220, is less than half the cost of an Odyssey battery and has about the same service life .

This company is local for me Gruber Power Services, ordered thee batteries two weeks ago, same size as the PC680 battery .
They gave me the wholesale price, no sales tax and I picked them up myself, got them for $23 each .

All of my bikes have this battery, two in the oilhead .
I use inexpensive batteries, due to the short service life of batteries here in the desert, average life of a motorcycle battery is around 2-3 years here, regardless of what type or brand you have . >:(
