If you're referring to the holes for the mirrior, the nut on the bottom side was probably not tight enough and moved around for a while .

Or possibly a non-OEM mirror was installed and the hole had to be opened up for a larger diameter threaded area .

But the paint has also worn badly on the one side compared to the other.

I can't understand why that would happen to the extent it has.

OK, specifically where and what "wear" are you referencing?

And have you noticed the two different shapes of the brake and clutch lever? I'm messing with you here...

If I"m not mistaken there should be a thick washer on the top side of the control perch / casting it prevents the stem of the mirror from riding on the aluminum housing / casting .

Had to go out and look at the '81 R65 just to make sure, there's a thick washer and it sticks out about 2-3 mm beyond the stem of the mirror .

It's an anodized finish on the original parts not paint so I'd be surprised if it wore like that without some abrasive assistance. Maybe the part is not original.

The holes for the OEM mirrors were tapped. There was no nut/washer fitted to the lower face of the perch. A unique "tapered" -for lack of a better word- stalk and hex locked the OEM mirrors in place after the stalks had been spun down and positioned as to rider preference.

Looks like a PO drilled out the mirror threads and fitted aftermarket mirrors that were secured with a washer and nut on the bottom. That's probably why you don't have a throttle locking screw as mentioned in your other post. The mirror's washer n' nut wouldn't fit with the locking screw in place. Bastid messed up your control perches quite well, he did.

The machined recess for the throttle-side mirror is factory. Looked at my R65s and there it is.

The asphalt wear on the brake lever indicates the bike took a little nap laying down in the road. Many of the older BMWs have had replacement control assemblies -frequently from the used market- fitted when switches fail or the part has been damaged.

None of my R65's has a threaded hole for the mirrors, there is a large washer on top of the control casting and a washer and nut on the bottom side  .

I'm the only owner of the '81 R65, so I know no one else has worked on the bike but me since I've had it, almost 33 years .

Now that's interesting, Bob. My perches are tapped and no hardware required on the bottom.

I went out and checked the '81 R65 and the two LS's and they are all the same, no threads .

From what I can see the the large washer on top of the perch / casting is steel, to prevent the steel mirror stem from trying to pull through the softer aluminum .

I just measured the hole diameter, it's 8 mm .

I wouldn't be surprised if a previous owner threaded the hole for a larger diameter mirror stem .

That all makes sense as the p/o has made some "modifications" to the bike over his ownership.

I'll post some images of the mirrors, they look in remarkable condition for the year...

Just got back from a ride. The clutch lever has more finish wear than the brake lever has. This is on my 1982R65. You are using the clutch lever mor than the brake.
