Enjoying my R100S immensely except for one minor inconvenience...that freakin' self-retracting sidestand.
Here's the deal: If I'm on the right side of the bike and the bike's on the sidestand- when I lift the bike to vertical, the sidestand snaps up even if I don't want it to do so. Grrr
The tall sidewall profile of the Metzler tires makes it very scary attempting to swing a leg over from the right side and getting myself 'planted' before the bike falls over. Hasn't happened yet, but. This is especially problematic when jockeying the bikes around the shop.
Bengt Phorqs reminded me of his R90 "fix" and even forwarded a link so I could correct this issue. Note the info about BMW altering the sidestand function in 1972 to counter a lawsuit.

Listened to Mike, read the article and headed out to the shop. Duane said it took him 5 seconds to do the job. Sure it did. ::) Uh huh.
Here's the excrement in the punch bowl... I found a BMW OEM bracket that serves as: 1) an attach point for the spring, and, 2) a clever way of preventing owners from doing just what I wanted to do!
I'm aware that several of our R65 forum folk have other Airheads. This factory sidestand fix may be found on post 1972 Airheads up through the /7 series. My shop time was a realistic 20 minutes.

The yellow arrow points out the "modified" spring attach bracket. It has been bent -using a long drift and hammer- away from its normal position; that being snug against the chassis and preventing the fix. After moving it and loosening the 19mm motor mount nut, the bracket self-positioned itself when the sidestand was swung down. Don't forget to tighten up that big nut.

Another view. I'm pleased with the result plus my opinion of lawyers continues to be reinforced.
