Title: Radial tires
Post by: Barry on June 04, 2013, 03:30:18 PM
In the absence of much else happening on the technical front there is always a tire thread.

Interesting review here of the new radial tires for airheads

Price is a bit steep especially at over £100 a tire in the UK but radials are supposed to last longer as well as the handling benefits.

I checked the local tire outlets and only one has a rear Conti Attack in a size for an R65 rear, 110x18 .

Price $151US for the rear, the price, a little on the high side, but only $8US more than a 4.00x18 Metzeler Lazertec rear tire .

I would like to know what kind of tire life to expect before putting them on my bike .

Interesting, but I'm more than happy with my Macadams for now...

I put a Conti on the back of my R65 last month.  God knows which one it was as I cant remember.  But I will check.

It seems to run and handle well, but then I have had little to moan about with Conti's except a blip a few years back when they went through a period where I was getting through them too quickly.  This no longer seems to be such an issue.  Both my bikes are shod with conti's all round.

Cheers

I used to run the Conti "Twins" back in the late 70s early 80s and I seem to remember getting 5000 miles max out of a rear on an R100.  Sure glad tire tech has advanced since then!

Can't seem to find a fitment chart on the Conti or Bike Bandit sites. Wondering what rim sizes are reccomended for these sneakers? The 2.50x18 rear should be fine for the 120/90x18, but the 110/90x18 might be a bit much for the 2.15x18 front wheel.
Love to try them. Going from a bias ply bike to a radial bike a few years ago changed my whole outlook on life : )

Hello
I've checked the Continental web site in France.
They do not offer the Classic Road Attack in 18" front size ... Only 19".
So I won't be able to test them on the R65.
They are also overpriced. And if they last as long as the Road Attack tires, I need to win the lottery before buying a pair...
But it seems a very good idea to put a modern radial on these old beasts...
Edit :
A tire pro said to me that 90/90-18 is too thin compared to 3.25-18. He suggested to put 100/90-18 size tires on the R65 front wheel. This is what I use and I'm happy with it.
