I'm replacing a few parts, based on a thorough checkup done by the local airhead expert garage telling me his recommended replacements. Anything seem wrong about my parts selections?
bike an 81 R65, and has dual front ATE discs, and I believe the high US bars(?) Pics @ http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=29381313@N00&q=bmw%20r65
the list is:
-throttle cable upper & lower + throttle cable splitter
-choke cable upper & lower + cable splitter
-front disc brake pads
-front fork springs
-drum brake shoes
specific questions:
1) do the throttle and choke cables come as a kit, or do I need to buy all the upper/lower/splitter components separately?
2) How do I determine if I need the 487 or 382 mm cable length?
3) I didn't find a dual ATE discs pad # but do I just get two of the pad sets for the ATE single rotor? or similarly two of the EBC brand pads from Bob's.
4) I seem to remember reading somewhere that people recommend something other than OEM for the fork spring. Any other specific recommendation?
going through the fiche on max/bob's bmw, I think I need...

specific questions:
1) do the throttle and choke cables come as a kit, or do I need to buy all the upper/lower/splitter components separately?
Cables are purchased separately. The splitter assembly comes with the three interior bits. The rubber cover may be extra.
2) How do I determine if I need the 487 or 382 mm cable length?
Best way is to measure what you currently have installed. You do have the higher bars, ie: not the low and narrower Euro bars, so you will need the longer cables for carb and choke. No way of knowing if the bars are OEM North American or some other. For the choke (enrichener), may as well get new return springs. They will insure full opening of the enrichener circuit when the 'choke' is off. Part #13.11.1337370.
3) I didn't find a dual ATE discs pad # but do I just get two of the pad sets for the ATE single rotor? or similarly two of the EBC brand pads from Bob's.
Yes. Buy two pair of the EBC pads for your dual disc ATE calipers. Best pads you can get and much better then OEMs. EBC rear shoes are great, too.
4) I seem to remember reading somewhere that people recommend something other than OEM for the fork spring. Any other specific recommendation?
Why the recommendation for new fork springs? Have you checked them against "sag" specifications? If you have a "topping out" issue, it's probably due to a disintegrated rubber bushing that is part of the fork internals. Progressive branded springs have been tried by R65 riders but the consensus is you will get a much harsher ride. What about fork fluid levels and experimenting with fork oil weights?
Any parts ordering concerns can be eliminated by calling Bob's BMW and chatting up the parts folks. They can provide correct bits and add some reassurance to your ordering.

Thanks, honestly the fork springs I thought about just trying new oil but when I had a good airhead mechanic look at the bike he said put new fork springs on your to do list. I can tell I need something and for the next two weeks I have available guidance from someone who knows way more than me so figure for the cost of the springs why not do both the springs and new oil while I have help and access to tools/shop rather than trying to figure things out on my own.
But for my own knowledge, do I find the sag specifications in the owner manual or clymer? And does it explain how to check, if not how do I?

Research Snowbum's site for all things front fork.
But before throwing money at an unknown issue, perhaps consider disassembling the forks and checking that the 'rubber baby buggy bumper' is still in existence. If it's gone, you will experience a softer fork action, a bit of excess sag and a few knocks.
The little parts are w-a-y cheaper than a pair of new springs, OEM or otherwise.

When I was going over my bike I thought about replacing the fork springs. My local BMW told me to save my money. He advised to rebuild them and replace the bumpers then refill with 15wt fork oil instead of the BMW spec'd 7.5wt or the 10wt a lot of folks go to. He also advised slightly overfilling to 200cc instead of the spec'd 190cc.
I did and the change was amazing. They react so much better and are not overly harsh riding.

welp Bob's didn't have the springs in stock anyway so I didn't order them.
which part is the 'rubber baby buggy bumper' ?
one of these ?

Item # 24 .
A lot of parts sites, won't let you link to them, RealOEM is one of the few that does, the prices quoted here are usually not too accurate .
