The 'back light' on my tachometer is not working (suspect bulb but not verified). All other lights okay although the speedometer back light pretty dim. I downloaded a copy of the BMW R65 Owners Manual which suggests changing a failed bulb pretty straightforward. Clymer manual doesn't provide any detail. RePsycle BMW said can be tricky as instrument covers prone to cracking. Also mentioned bulb housings fragile and not readily available. Are the bulbs something I can get locally at an auto parts? Comments / suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeremy

Bulbs are available at your FLAPS. Use extreme caution removing the instrument shroud parts. Do not force anything.
The ignition key bezel must be removed. Keep track of the small screws and finish washers.

+1. Be verwy carwful...not impossible though...too bad they couldn't have made an easy to replace external like the speedo.

Assuming we are talking about an R65 there is no reason to risk the top instrument cover by removal. The lower cover comes off with 2 screws at no risk of damage. The base of the tacho is then visible which needs to be removed to replace the lamps. To access the tacho cover screws it's necessary to drop the headlamp down out of the way but that's just 2 bolts - easier, safer and quicker than removing the top instrument cover.
According to the BMW factory manual the lamps are listed as W10/3 wedge type 3W. The modern designation is W2.1×9.5d which is a commonly available automotive type either as a standard incandescent or LED type replacement.

Bike in question is indeed a R65 ('84). Thanks for detail re bulb. Manual suggests replacement is 'simple' but when does anything go simply with a 30 year old piece of machinery for which parts are getting to be as readily available as hens teeth?
Thanks,
Jeremy

The bulb housings can be fragile but I believe they are still available from BMW dealers.

Kinda late chiming in on this but just found my "stash". ::) I use a Wagner 158 bulb which is just a hair brighter than the stockers
