Hello to all,
Working in the garage today I slipped and dropped a wrench on the tank of my R65 LS. The tank, which has remained pristine for over thirty years, now has a chip in the paint !!!! After an extended cursing session....I decided to turn to the forum and see if I can get some ideas on where to get the matching touch up for my Henna Red paint. Any help is most appreciated.

Rick, I'd go to a local auto paint supplier with the tank and have it custom matched. I say that because the paint on your bike has aged and is probably not the exact same as the OEM paint. Also, I've tried all over the internet to find original paint for my bike, which is 1986 Azure Blue and haven't been able to find it.

I agree with paint fading over time, but original Glasurit paint can be ordered from Holt BMW in Ohio for any factory color you desire. Just tell them the paint code.

If you're wondering what the paint code is, it should be on a decal on the bottom of the tank, you'll probably need to remove the tank to get a good look at it .

.. and be prepared for the sticker shock of glasurit paint - and it generally isn't as easily used as your everyday can of rustoleum.
someday, I am thinking of getting my red LS (still with its faded, chipped original paint) a new paint job - perhaps in a smoke/red style similar to the R90S paint jobs, but in blood-red type of color.

The paint code on my 83 R65 is on a white paper sticker on top of the rear fender. And yes, the Glasurit is expensive. You get what you pay for. I have not repainted the gas tank on my bike even though there are a few small scratches.

Going to be an expensive chip repair should you buy the Glasurit paint. And after years of exposure and fading, the new paint will definitely not match the original. Cadmium colors are the worst.
I think I might consider buying a few little bottles of the DupliColor offerings and blend my own "Faded Henna Red".

Thanks for all the help. I have found the code...562, and ordered the 2oz touch up paint. The first chip always hurts the most.

My '82 501 Azur Blau had a complete paint job last summer. In France no one can get the original paints any more. They are banned and replaced by water based paint.
The painter told me that he won't be able to get the exact colour of the battery cover with original 82 colour on it. He told me the colour would be good in the sun but not exactly so in the shade. He was right. in the shade it is a little purplish (but it is subtle). The major drawback is that the paint has far less resistance to petrol. So you have to be extra careful when refuelling.
I, for one, would go the Galsurit route if I was able to get the paint and can find a painter apt to use it ! Alas I was not.
