Title: R65 Windshield?
Post by: mayadog on October 05, 2011, 04:54:03 PM
Hi folks.  I'm the new gal on the block.  I have a 1981 BMW R65 and I'd like a little coverage from the elements. Any suggestions of companies?  Want something medium to smaller sized that will be functional and easy to maintain.   Thanks.    Steffie

National Cycle makes a few models (Plexistar, Plxifaring) that might work - though these tend to be the larger/wider, clear acrylic models.   They'll offer pretty good protection overall, but are large enough to have some 'sail' effect when riding in strong crosswinds or when passing large vehicle on the interstate.   IF you do alot of riding in the cooler weather (not sure what latitude you are at) these can be nice, but are usually as large as you want to go for a handlebar mounted shield.  National Cycle also has some street shield models that might work for you.   Another popular brand (but which I have no experience with) is Slipstreamer.

If one want something a bit more upscale looking/sportier in appearance, you could go with a Rifle brand fairing - I believe they have a couple which could mount on an R65 - these have painted fiberglass/plastic body parts with smaller windshields - I've seen the smaller Rifle fairing on some R65 bikes before and they do look very sharp, more money tho.

Also, I cannot remember the brand of fairing that forum member Monte Miller (montmil is his username) has on his black R65, but it is a decent looking, neat smaller fairing that  provides no protection for the hands, but keeps the air off his chest (being in central Texas, he doesn't need the cold weather protection muchHe would be happy to fill you in if you ask him about it.

Last, but certainly not least, Givi (brand) makes some good products too, in quite a variety of sizes.  Not every one they make will fit your bike, but quite a fair number of them can/will.   I wouldn't necessarily buy a Givi windscreen from the website at this link, but it will show you many of the Givi model options available.   I think that there are several members of this forum with various Givi screens, so if you have questions about certain models they may be able to give more specifics.

The Givi A200 fits neatly using headlamp mount bolts only. But if you have the clock/voltmeter pods you'll have to Dremel it down a bit on the sides to clear them. You may have to do it on one side for access to the trip zero. In place it's maybe decorative rather than useful! Doesn't keep much wind off.

I'm going for a screen on mine when it's finished, the Givi A601 looks good, anybody any experience of this screen or similar?

Steffie the screen you fit will depend on the handlebars you have ... are they Low European style or high "cruiser style" mine has high bars and a "Fassoni" Spitfire sceen which is one thats widely available here in the UK.Very comfortable in bad weather.

I have a Slipstreamer on my R100.  Good compromise between sporty and coverage...

Chris, the seat is a monoshock factory "Comfort Seat".  Probably the best boxer seat they ever made.

Thanks Justin,

Would it fit on a 65 with or without modification?

Probably not without a lot of modding.  I had to put on the tail cowl from the monoshock with custom made mounting.  On the '65 I'm thinking maybe a LWB rear subframe as well?

Ok, maybe I'll leave it for now and stick with the stock seat...

Thanks Justin

I'm deciding between the Slipstreamer S-05
 (https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.leatherup.com%2Fimagesproc%2F177839_H_SH315_MW355.jpg&hash=baed655d40c78af572fcb2b995f9ca0285bac79f)

and the Givi A650

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.twistedthrottle.com%2Fezimagecatalogue%2Fcatalogue%2Fvariations%2F2089-425x350.jpg&hash=a8f4522e1b7064758e9ca66f63f03b8d25153e45)

I'm presuming both will fit, but none specifically list the R65. The Slipstreamer is a bit wider. My R65 came with the National Cycle Plexifairing which is pretty large with the extra lower protection. I don't think I need one that big although I know it's one that will fit.

I was considering adding a fairing to my 'new' R65 as well. I spoke with Mark at Re Psycle and he highly recommended a Givi. Also advised a Shoei might be available. Less protection but more sporty. Pictures he sent follow.
I've decided to ride her nekkid for a bit before making a decision.
I pick her up next Saturday! Haven't ridden since my trials days (Yamaha TY250) over 30 years ago.

I put the Slipstreamer  Turbo on my bike for winter riding. It gives great protection to your chest and gives some protection to your hands which is what I was looking for. However I am 5 ft 8in with a 30 inch inseam and it directs the wind that comes over the top of the windscreen right at the top of my helmet. I get a hump hump noise at highway speeds that is real annoying. If I could do it over again I would try the GIVI but no protection for your hands. Just my 2 cents worth.

Since we're talking about fairings, I'll throw a picture of mine in the ring (or I would, if you geniuses would tell me why I can't upload pictures from my mac).

Looks great, more wind protection than you know what to do with.

I've heard good things about parabellum windshields (www.parabellum.com)  Anybody have experience with them?  They offer a variety of heights and could probably make recommendations if you gave them some measurements

I've always ridden nekkid, but they even make a screen for the R65LS... so who knows

Matt, even your Flicker photo won't open as you've tagged it as being "Private".

I'm riding an old eMac. Still way behind in the march of progress. Peeps tell me resistance is futile but, hey, you're reading this. Right?

I have an unused Flicker account but much prefer Photobucket for ease of uploads. To post a pic to this forum, locate your photo selection. You'll see a small "gear wheel" in the top-right corner of your album photo. Clicking the gear, you get a drop down menu. Select "get links" and theen click on IMG codes. Code is copied automatically and all you do is paste into your forum post.

It's so simple even an R65 caveman can do it. :D

It shames me to say that I'm a "computer professional", but there it is.  My R65 used to be this shiny and nifty.

Matt, your fairing is Da Boss. [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Better keep that scoot locked up snug or next time you're pushing your 'green' lawnmower and I'm in Austin, you might end up with. . . a nekkid R65.

Ha.  The critical phrase here is "used to".  The fairing is slightly worse for wear after being hit in a parking lot, hit in a garage, rear ended in traffic, and finally binned around 45 mph.  Add in some incidental stress fractures, a little melting here and there...  I'm saving my yardwork money for a new pichler.

Even the bags are in rough shape after all that action.  And my exhausts or bag mounts have been slightly "adjusted" in a negative manner.  (That means more melting.  :()

I would probably be happy to see the old stuff go, although I'm not sure what one would do with it!
