Just finished up repainting the black pipes for my LS. They are now baking as the final step. I used a hi-temp rattle can rated for 1200 deg - intermittently. Could not find the 1300-2000 rating I wanted locally. Now I'm musing on, just how hot do our cows get? Bob, have you done any testing on this one? I looked up the melting point for aluminum and found it to be 933.47 K, 660.32 °C, 1220.58 °F. [smiley=flamethrowingsmiley.gif] so I'm thinking that I'm safe.

No Rich, I have not done any testing yet, but after I get the R65 running again, I'll get the non-contact in-fared thermometer from work, and see what kind of temps I can get.

Somehow I knew you were the man! Yes, by all means I'm curious.

I could do a check on the oilhead tomorrow, as long as we don't have a major meteorological 'event', late tonight, as I'm at work now, and won't get out until midnight.

I've had good results using the POR-15 Black Velvet product (flat black, good to 1200F also).
I would bet that the exhaust temps in a normally tuned airhead up by the headers might
reach as high as 700F under hard running conditions- I'd be curious to find out as well.

The Eastwood Satin Black Exhaust Coating has held up well although after it's been there a while it's more flat than satin.

I can state as fact that the melting point of human flesh is less that 700F... :'(
(why does the inside of my left arm suddenly start feeling painful???)

Dont forget to give the insides of those pipes a good squirt of paint also. It will make the outside run cooler and your paint will last longer.....Dew.

I still remember a lady friend touching the exhaust pipe before I could stop her 25 years ago.. "what a nice colour blue this is....arrrggh! "
Her fingerprint was on the metal for quite some time! Relationship didn't work out for some reason. :-/

Don't know what it is in degree's F or C, but in tonyland the header pipe temp is fu**ing hot :)

I am (was) screaming (sort of) in agony and stomping my foot while reading that. That really hurts.
Like a moth to a flame...

Last time I checked, that's about where mine run, too! [smiley=1drink.gif]
