Title: How to test/check ignition ?
Post by: georgesgiralt on March 08, 2013, 10:53:03 AM
Hello,
My R65 (1982 model) had been thoroughly reviewed last April/May. She has around 170 000 km and I know it well as I'm the first and only owner.
Since May she ran fine and a few weeks ago she started to exhibit a strange behaviour :
Often, I can't run it full throttle and  the engine won't go above 4000 Rpm easily.
But yesterday I was able to run it hard and perfectly. This morning I've had the opportunity to ride it for around a hundred km on various roads. Most of the journey, it was perfect, but sometimes the engines was looking like it was starved of fuel or had a bad ignition. All of this appeared at high Rpm. the bike is fine either in town or on the road between idle and 3500 rpm.
The ignition trigger unit is from factory. The coil had been exchanged last spring, spark leads and sparks plugs are brand new (NGK 5k Ohm caps, Champion N6Y plugs)
As I've checked that fuel flow is very good even when the bike exhibit the problem, I would like to check that the ignition is not the problem here. Of course, my timing light tells me everything is perfect and the advance mechanism is OK (the timing light shows that it opens OK and returns OK).
So an idea or advice would be treated with great interest....
Thanks a lot in advance !

Have you had any other intermittent electrical issues with the bike ?

Again, I'm thinking out loud again !!!!! ;D ;D ;D

The OEM ceramic fuses have caused problems with getting loose in the metal holders .

Have you checked the main ground/earthing point for the bikes electrical circuits for corrosion/ looseness .

Usually located on the voltage regulator fasteners, a bunch of solid brown wires 'ganged' together at one terminal end .

Yes,
I've charging issues (the plug at the voltage regulator is badly oxidized)
I have checked the grounding when I returned the bike to service. I've to check the fuses. good idea.

It sounds more and more like an electrical issue than fuel since it's intermittent. Usually the fuel system doesn't work one day and not the next, back and forth.

Also, since you've gone through everything ignition related and carbs, it's sounding like the problem is elsewhere. Since it's persisting, it's got to be as yet not found.

I think you've got either bad connections or compromised lead somewhere. Not a fun job running that one down!
