Your first concern, Dave, will be to find an aftermarket speedometer unit that will marry up with the OEM drive cable. Luck to you there, amigo.

Plan B might involve checking out the options offered by TrailTech and Acewell. Both offer electronic gauges -some chrome- that contain other information provisions besides just your speed. Google 'em up.

I have a TrailTech Vapor on my R65 while my son is fitting an Acewell on his R65.

The speedo ratio printed on the face of Airhead speedos is the number of cable revolutions for 1 mile traveled and therefore the correct ratio depends on which final drive you have.  Assuming it's a 31/9 (3.44:1)) that would have a speedo ratio of 1276.

A 37/11 (3.36:1) would be 1244

The Acewell digital speedo/tach has a BMW specific cable that can be bought to connect it. Replaces the original speedo cable right at the gearbox with a digital sender and a wire to the gauge.

The least expensive chrome gauge is the 2853. They go way up from there.
