i can now put it on its stand in a pair of old trainers , instead of stout boots and a back up truss! someone said it'd be one of the best things i'd do to my r65, they were right.

I think that might have been me.
The stand looks good and at least you got it done straight away. I put the job off for a couple of years and wished I hadn't.

I see the difference in the b4 and after pictures , How did you accomplish that? I have a 5000 lb 1979 R65 that's a real ball breaker to get on or off the stand

Looks like the same stand to me, except the stops have been fixed somewhat. I would have welded the stops a bit more to make the stand more vertical. I left one so vertical that I was afraid to leave it unstrapped to the header for fear it would come down on its own. ;D
Took a while for the stops to wear in and resolve that issue.
Looks like the side stand needs some help as well.

The side stand wouldn't have originally been bent like that. It should be dead straight. It wasn't the best design though so perhaps someone bent it deliberately so they could deploy it with their foot while on the bike. They don't bend easy that's for sure.

i think its an common problem with the stands the ends that sit against the frame are pieces of tube reinforced with a couple of thin slivers of sheet to thicken 'em up a bit a nut had come loose on the left side and spread the end on that side and the right had just deformed , probably just use (and misuse!)
it was so bad instead of rolling of the stand it just slid along the ground , wearing the ends away! i had to lift the bike up and flick the stand back. (at last ! the years weight training pay off! lol) see my other post for pics.
btw the stands vertical enough! its secure, but easy to use (smug mode) .whats wrong with the prop stand? seems to work ok, bit unnerving the way it shoots up as soon as you lift the bike tho! mind you i've had 1 or 2 near misses with jap machines when i've left 'em down. ::)

A bit off-topic, but with my Triumph, if I forget to retract the sidestand and engage first gear... the engine shuts down. Little switch that engages only when the stand is up. It has reminded me a couple times...

Nothing wrong with the stand if it works for you.
I've removed one of the two side stand springs which stops it flying all the way back up. I find it much easier to use on the rare occasions I do use it but there is no longer a safety margin if the one spring was to break.
It's a general observation that anything old of German manufacture that has a spring with a safety function then you can be sure the spring will be too strong. for ease of use.

I'm tall (1,85m) so take this accordingly.
To ease the use of the original lateral stand, I've put on the aluminium tip a length of petrol tubing left from a refurb.
This allows me to grab the tip with the boot when I'm on the bike and lay gently the bike on it's stand when going down...
Try it. It is cheap and really useful, even when trying to grab the side stand when on the left side of the bike...
Ihave to use this trick on the Honda, too.
