Title: R65 and colour choices
Post by: Goldentie on October 22, 2012, 05:22:16 PM
Dear good old and new friends I would like to let you know that for once more I am the proud owner of a 1983 red R65 with 127000 km on the clock. I managed to keep it ‘’secret’’ for almost a year planning since then to rejoin the forum. You can see her in my PBase.com album (http://www.pbase.com/stavros29/bmw_r65_1983) and since then I have done a few improvements such as replacing the rear wheel fender, adding a new handlebar and a few other little things.

I am a bit confused with her colour thought. The red metallic is obviously a relatively recent paint job. I bought a regular tank (that is without the tool box cover) and a rear seat cowl, the correct type for the year of the bike and I would like to make up my mind to choose the right colour. The Hell red that seems to imitate the current paint and that I do like quite a lot doesn’t appear to be correct for the 1983 R65 model. My guess is that originally it was paint in Henna red and that sometime in the past the owner decided to change it by keeping the red colour in the licence of the bike but not bothering with the original code. I do intend to choose a colour that matches the year of the bike and the one I like the most, if Hell red is indeed out of the options, is the Yuka Turquoise metallic – paint code 159 with the gold pinstrip. The more sporty Henna red would be my last option.

Is it possible to know the original colour by the frame number, (the sticker on the fender is long gone) and also if the bike has been an ex-police vehicle due to the tank, (although I doubt it)?

I would like to hear your thoughts about it.

Thank you once more for your hospitality,

Stavros

Stavros,  This link will provide you with the OEM color combinations used on the 1983 R65s. Several to choose from.

Hard to go wrong with metallic blue and silver pinstripes.  Very handsome.

I think that the Henna Red was only available on the LS model, but I stand to be corrected if anyone has  an original non LS Henna Red model.

Personally, I really like that red color as it is!!

I have a newbi question... whats that little box on your tank? I´ve seen it in other bikes, and never was able to tell its function!!

Congrats!!

Tool box. Often seen on older BMW model fuel tanks and police models.

Thank you Ed!

The truth is I've always been around...just kept a low profile.

This may not lead you anywhere, but if there is a toll free BMW customer service number you can call, give it a try, they will need the last seven characters of the bikes VIN .

There were BMW colors like that - for instance the 1977 R100 S. I think your bike looks really good and would leave it if it were mine!

But it is yours and there are much worse things than painting it a stock color.  ;)

Welcome back to the forum! (even though you never left...)

My 1983 R65 with the factory 501 blue and silver pin stripes. Still has the OEM color code sticker on the rear fender, under the seat. This resto is definitely not the way I bought the bike...

Those are BMW OEM R65LS cans. Sorry you're a wee bit late to the party... I just sold two pair of these LS mufflers to a couple long-time forum members.

Keep watching eBay and similar sites. They turn up on occasion.

I'm now running Norton Dunstall re-pops on both my R65s. A bit more roarty they are. I really like the exhaust note.

Stavros!  So long! (https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pbase.com%2Ftomfarr%2Fimage%2F117618042.jpg&hash=1cdbcd217b1baee16ea88d62ae98fdb6e22d9a02) And you have two 5 year-olds helping you work on the bike!  How precious!  :)
Any more since?  My best to Teresa!

Nice looking bike!  Yeah, that tail section had me confused, too.
Keep in mind that the seat pan for the 1st & 2nd generation models were different, you can't just switch tail pieces.  But the 2nd gen is the one to have, IMO.  It is a much nicer glove box back there.  I've no idea how the two seats compare comfort-wise.

I am parting out my R65 finally, thinking I was done with the sport, but in a sudden 2nd wind I ended up with a 2012 Honda CBR250R last August.  It is a great bike, I'm really enjoying it.  I'm getting ready for winter by installing my BMW 12v outlet jack (heated vest) and some aftermarket heated grips.

How is the K75 doing?

This my 82 LS. The Hel red only came on the LS in the UK.

Pic is from the Acer Cafe meet in Brighton South of England in September.
