Title: Bean Can Maintenance
Post by: Red_Hen on October 22, 2012, 05:10:05 PM
Hi Gang,

Yesterday Tina went into the hanger for the winter.  After pulling her battery to store inside, I removed the beancan.

I removed the inspection cap and the top cover and she looks pretty clean inside.  Wondering if there is any maintenance needed? I realize the bike is 30 years old but since the can is "sealed" is there any maintaining needed?

What are your thoughts?

About the only thing in there, that may need lubrication, is the pivot point for the centrifugal weights of the advance mechanism .

Sticking weights are about the only issue that i have heard  as being common problem with the 'bean can' .

Ken, you can pop open the oval-shaped cover on the side and see the weights and springs, etc. Small needle oiler and a drop would keep you lubed up for a long time.

Truth be told, most folks blame poor idle hi revs on sticking weights but the problem is often incorrect idle mixture screw adjust.

Thanks, guys

I wasn't having any problems with it - just wanted to confirm its condition and it looks good.

A friend sent me a spare Hall sensor, that I'll covet when the day arrives and it's time to be replaced.
