Title: R65 Scrambler?
Post by: luckyd20 on August 21, 2012, 07:58:09 PM
I'm looking into making the R65 into a scrambler. Would dirt bike handle bars work out? Also will I have space under a stock fender for some nobbies?

The space under the fender is tight. The stock fibre glass fenders are also heavy so some scope there to replace them with alloy and save weight.

Have thought about other areas for weight reduction ?

Replacing the bosch starter with a valeo or ND together with a smaller battery could save 12 lbs.

Spoked wheels if you can get them will save a couple of lbs each.

6 volt coils are surprisingly heavy and an modern dual output 12v coil will save a 1 or 2 lbs

I can see 20 lbs been saved easy enough but often wonder how the original R80G/S managed to be 42 lbs lighter than an R65. I suppose  2 into 1 exhaust might have saved 10 lbs and the whole headlight instrument arrangement looks a lot lighter.

Scrambler cool idea. Not so tough to add wire wheels, wide bars, raise fork brace to clear knobby tires, scrambler fenders, high exhaust, SKID PLATE!.

I want to build a scrambler as well. Not that difficult, though the front wire wheel can be expensive once located. They're almost as scarce as rocking horse poo.

You might try a search of posts by our member "motu" - a Kiwi, IIRC. He has a most excellent R65 tracker that might give you some construction ideas.

I have thought about it a lot too!
It seems a used GS would be cheaper and more competitive off road...
