Had trouble getting the 80 R65 to get a smooth idle.
Drove it to the local shop. Now time to Tow it home.
End of cam was falling apart in the timing Gear.
So what to do?
Part out the bike?
Pull engine and replace the Cam?
Buy E-Bay motor(will an 82 work?) and drop it in?
Shop to do it would cost $2500.......

Jiminy Crickets that is bad luck! I've never seen a broken camshaft on one of these engines before. That is a big quote to repair - even by BMW (Bring More Wampum) standards.. Yes, an engine from an 81-84 R65 will fit, though if you have the older, heavy flywheel clutch and not the 81-> clutch carrier assembly there will be some additional clutch changeover parts that will be needed, unless you get a replacement transmission too.
The bike looks too nice to part out, in my opinion.

It's not that difficult replacing a camshaft. Maybe tear it down in your spare time, or. Get a good used shaft, or buy a new one. Take it to a tech day and get some help installing and buttoning back up. The guys would love it!

I will dig into my parts bike shortblock this weekend and see how easy it is to get to. It is in the bike with tranny and driveshaft, so will see how accurate the Haynes manual and other online info is to pulling the motor and getting to the CAM.
