Got a question for LS owners, the instrument top 'fairing' on my '82 LS, is being held in place by velcro and tape .
Whatever clip or parts that are supposed to be there, have long since broken off/disappeared before I got the bike .
It was put together with some sort of glue by a previous owner .
I had the fairing 'pop' up at 80 mph, don't want that to happen again .
Anyone come up with a more permanent ' fix' than I have ?
Pictures if possible .
I'm coming up on my 6 week annual vacation and the bike is going to be worked on and the fairings are coming off, so I'd like to do this at this time .

I'll certainly have a look at mine on the weekend & 'photgraph what I can; I'm away at present.
(If anyone else get's in first, go for it, of course)

The little plastic tabs were just slightly back from the forwardmost point where the black cowling and the red/silver part meet. While they weren't really strong, they were in the best location for keeping the cowling down. I haven't had a problem with my cowling lifting off and I amd holding it down with a couple strips of heavy duty/industrial strength velcro strips that basically pull down from where I have cemented the mating velcro bits toward the part of the cowling that is just above the headlight shell. The velcro straps cinch around bracket that is below and on either side of the headlight (or maybe it is the lowermost portion of the headlight bracket - I can't recall).. Once one is moving with some speed, the air pressure tend to push downward on that black piece and keep it in place - unless it manages to get under the front lip of the black cowling to lift it.
Do you still have the inner black plastic fairing cover pieces that snap around the top of the fork tubes on each side? I think that they help in preventing much air from trying to sneak in around the headlight and under the top black cowling piece. But, they are a PITA to fettle with anytime once has to change for oil, route a cable, etc. etc.
I'll see if I have any pictures - but it isn't easy getting a good picture, or even my hands, up in there.

I have the2 black covers at the rear part of the the fairing assembly .
The velcro I am using, is a self adhesive type .
I'm contemplating putting thin sheet metal tabs , 'glued' to the upper instrument cowl and then drill holes in them, so I put them on the bolts that secure the headlight bucket .

I made thin sheet metal tabs bolted to the headlight main bolts. I use a small self tapping screw through the black plastic and into the sheet metal on each side. The screws are painted black and you can just see one of them in this photo.

Bob,
I was able to acquire a new black upper fairing PN385 when I acquired my LS. The OEM's forward tabs and the rearward "horseshoes" were broken for the most part. I'm told by MAX's the black fairing is once again being made and was to be available in mid July this year (I didn't follow up to see if it is). The ancillary parts, grommets, bolts, nuts etc are available as I purchased them from MAX's when I did mine.
It isn't fun to remove, but I have technique using popsicle sticks on the forward tabs that makes the task a bid easier, pinching in each side to clear the "tabs" of the lower fairing (silver/red portion), as another pair of hands slides the black unit rearward and slightly up removing it sufficiently to reach up underneath to undue the turn indicator wires. I also loosen up bolts/nuts on each of the two "horseshoe" mounts to take the pinch off.

The horseshoe mounts are a waste of time, mine broke off the first time I removed the cover. The ignition surround bezel holds the top down securely.
I ditched the gromets and their mounting bolts as well as they no longer had a function.
I can remove my cover in a minute, it's just 2 screws and the bezel ring all easily accessed from the top.

Velcro and JB weld on mine. Easy to remove and stays in place. Your welcome to have a look.
Ah. Just dug this up:
