This Is has been talked about a lot on the car forums I go to. Since zinc is not in most normally used oil thi s used to help in wear of the lifters. Same say you need it some say you don't.

I don't think anyone would argue that the correct amount of ZDDP in our oil is a good thing but apparently you can have too much so more is not necessarily better.
The ZDDP debate now has a life of it's own on the net and oil additive manufactures are beginning to feed off it. There is one thing they all say and many people repeat as if if were an indisputable fact and that is the assertion that All old engines have flat lifters and All modern engines have roller cam followers. The inference being that modern oils do not have or need any high pressure additives. I have a very big problem accepting it's as black and white as that. I'm sure that not all modern engines have roller followers and I'm sure that modern oil do have some high pressure additives just that they are not ZDDP. I'd like to hear from a real oil chemist on the content of high pressure additives in modern oils.

I've been using the Eastwood ZDDP in my R100 since I did the top-end overhaul as all of my lifters were galled where they ride against the cam. I have since did a better job of reading labels and found that Valvoline Racing Oil makes a point of proclaiming their inclusion of ZDDP.
