Title: Skins
Post by: Dick_Stilton on July 10, 2007, 04:35:30 PM
Dick here.

To my utter amazement I have discovered that the front tyre on my R65 is over 14 years old! I think its time to change it. What tyres do other R65 owners recommend?

Cheers.

14 years old ! After 6 years in this desert heat, tires are falling apart ! Michelin Macadam tires are quite popular on this forum. I have run Metzeler ME33/ME99 and now Lasertec tires since 1987, and for my use-age, a very good tire. If you ride a lot in cold weather, the Metzelers take a few miles to get warm and feel slippery until they do get warmed up. I don't ride much in wet conditions being, as I reside in a desert, and the stock brakes on my R65 fade pretty fast in rain ( I've never felt comfortable riding my R65 in wet conditions). So I can't give a good owner comment in wet conditions. I get about 12-13,000 miles on a front tire, and 8-9,000 miles on a rear tire. Metzeler tires and tubes are also more costly than most of the other tires available for our bikes.

I am using the touring Continentals on my cafe racer.  Long lasting and pretty good grip.  Certainly longer lasting than the Bridgestones I had on before - not that they were a bad tyre either.  Nor were the Chen Sings (or whatever) that were fitted before that.

To be frank, I am not such a great rider to be really worried about which tire is the best grip, as long as it is black and round, I am fine.  Tires are pretty good these days, whatever you buy.
