Title: What seats will fit an R65 ?
Post by: Bonneybear on July 08, 2007, 08:05:21 PM
Besides an R65 seat of course , will a R80st seat or any other model fit in place of original. Mine is brown with a strap. I dont like it much. it's in great shape though. .......Thoughts... :-/

Why do you not try and get it recovered in a colour of your choice...black perhaps?

I had a scabby old brown one on mine before I converted it to a cafe racer.  Unfortunately it was also heavily corroded so it wne tin the bin.

I have a Russell daylong saddle on my '80..fantastic seat. Could not recommend it too highly.

Looks like this: http://www.day-long.com/new_pages/k100.html

i think most agree that the best bet is to have a uphostler redo your seat in the color of your choice over that of a cover. as far as your 80, you can use seats from 78-80 r65 only. nothing else will work.

or you could go nuts like me and put on a seat made for a chopper! ;D

Not sure here, just relying on memory , which isn't the greatest anymore.
Weren't the 'brown' covered seats only on a selected few R65's.  Just thinking it might be worth sourcing a replacement black seat and keeping the brown one,  "it's in great shape though." to sell to someone looking to do that perfect restoration.

The brown seats were used on the '79 and '80 models only, and were flatter overall with a steeper, shorter cowling wedge at the rear.
You can graft a later seat from the '81 thru '84 models onto the earlier bikes, but they're not very commonplace to find used & you need to also replace the rear tool "box", possibly the hinges too.

You can also wait around for a Corbin, Sargent, etc. to pop up, and hope you get lucky on the price. That's what I did, but again, doesn't happen every day, or even every 6 months.

Personally, if it's just the brown color or a torn-up cover, I'd replace that with a black cover and be done with it.
Supposedly the earlier, flatter seats were more comfortable than the later dished ones anyway.
