Title: rear marker & brake lamp
Post by: Jon_P on July 08, 2007, 01:00:07 PM
my rear marker and brake lamp are not working?? i turn the key on to park and the marker works, if i press the brakes for the brake lamp that doesnt work also. when i switch the key to run the rear lamp does dark and no brake lamp?? i have run the wiring diagram front to back and i dont see anything but the key switch that might have a bad internal connector. this sound right to anyone else?

i was out running around on the bike today when my local johnny law noticed i didnt have a brake lamp or rear lamp. he followed me home (i was only three blocks away) and told me to fix it before it goes on the road again. might just hot wire it and see. but i just dont see where the power comes from other than through the switch.

Jon,

If I recall this part of the circuit is fairly simple.  Check your earths.  Get your multimeter out.

If you are using a cheap after market lamp, be especially critical of that.  I am currently using such a device, which needed a bit of tweeking to get it working - and have to check it regularly core corrosion etc.

Jon, I've read your post several times and each time I'm more confused.  Does it work until the brake is actuated, does it only work if the brake is actuated, does it only work in the "park" position?  Please re-word/re-write and re-post your issue.  A lot of the time circuit issues that don't seem to make any sense are a bad/missing ground as the circuit will try to "find" a ground through all sorts of things with oftentimes strange results...

the rear running lamp only works in park, once it is switched to run it goes out?? looking at the factory wiring diagram that shows the inside of the switch it looks like it should also provide power to the rear marker in both on or park.

the brake lamp is my own fault and i spent some quaility time with my wiring harness last night, i found where i removed the power for that. that is now squared away.

i like the idea of having a key but i may just put on a small toggle switch under the seat and use that with the kill switch on the bars. or maybe run a series of toggles in a combination setting in place of a key if that makes sense.

hope that helps clear up what i was asking about the rear running lamp justin.

I think you should just be able to tap off whatever lug on the switch comes hot when in the run position.  Should be easy to determine with your meter.
