Title: Speedometer questions and observations, 1981 R65
Post by: boney on July 15, 2012, 10:52:15 PM
The speedo on our newly acquired R65 never goes much over 40-45. When I take a real close look at it, there's a "sweep" mark on the inside of the crystal directly under the area where the speedo stops.

After having read the airheads article about fixing odometers, I decided to open it up and take a peek at what might be going on in there.

It turns out that the axis of the speedometer needle is not perpendicular to the glass and bezel, nor the housing when it is installed snugly. And because of such, the needle contacts the backside of the glass. It doesn't appear that there is any way to adjust the internal mounting of the mechanism.

Is there anything that anyone knows about to fix this? Is it possible the housing is slightly off? I can think of a few ways to shim things in there, including the bezel so it stands off a little, but I thought I'd run it by the masses before I do anything.

Sounds like the metal canister (housing) is bent where the speedometer mechanism mounts.
