Hi all,
Had an issue with the indicators not working and no tail light, thought it might be a fuse, but not so lucky.
My car has gone to the panel beater, because the wife backed up the driveway and discovered she was too close to my car when she heard the noise. Anyway my car has gone to the panel beaters and if i want to go to work I need to fix the bike
I pulled out the electrical diagrams to chase wires but this bike has a hazard flasher and different wire colours to everything I have and can find.
A single Blue/yellow wire for power to the flasher unit which leads to the hazard switch. Not somehting I have found on any diagrams, could be a previous owner mod. Thats just where the difference starts but they are all around the flasher circuit.
In the process of finding this fault, I removed the tank, and broke the end off the fuel filter. Bugger, what am I going to do Sunday afternoon and shops have already closed.
I have a 1962 Valiant wreck I am stripping and it has an aftermarket filter that can be pulled apart and cleaned, so I clean that up and lengthen hoses to fit it, and in the process snap the nozzle off the fuel tap. ???? Am I jinxed today, I seem to be ham fisted and breaking everything. I still need the bike going tomorrow morning.
I grab the broken filter and cut the end off keeping a small amount of thebody and trim it to fit into the nut of the fuel tap. There is now no Gauze in the tap, but at least I still have a filter.
I have attached a photo of the temporary filter, just a little bigger than the previous one, and sticking out a bit further.
I had to lengthen the fuel lines to stop the lines kinking.
That's all the bits I broke in finding the fault before I have started looking for the fault.
Turns out the 12 volt relay has died. As I said before shops closed. I look back at my 1962 Valiant (the good unregistered one I'm restoring, not the wreck) and I have fitted relays for the headlights and they are the same type (12V 30A). So I cannibalise the Valiant to get the Beemer running.
So its 10pm and I can ride the bike tomorrow morning. So I'm still happy.
Now there are no shops in Darwin to buy old BMW parts from, so tonight will be ordering parts over the internet and riding for the next 2 days watching that nothing goes wrong.
I just love days when everything goes smoothly and today was not one of them.

Yeah, those plastic petcock ends can break off. That's why I like the earlier metal ones. And if the fuel line resists coming off, slit it! Better than chancing breaking anything.
The next best thing to everything going smoothly is overcoming all obstacles and getting the product in the end.

John, I might suggest you be extra cautious for the next few days when handling any sharp, pointy things. At least that's the advice my bride gives me when I head out to the shop...

And of course that wasn't the end, in the morning the indicators would not work. Tracked it down to an inline diode.
$35.00 for a diode ???? is that $1.00 for the diode and $34 because it says its for a BMW.
I pulled out a spare power diode from my shed and crimped the ends and its working again.

if you open up the case of the OEM diode, you'll find a common diode, like a 1N4001 in there, easy to replace when you know it .

$1.00 for an 1N4001 (probably the most common diode in the world) is a bit steep. You should get a pack of ten for that.

Monte, no one is as cheap as you are. I have never met anyone else who takes advantage of a "bereavement discount" at a motel when visiting relatives out of town. I'm just sayin.... 8-)

I promise. We did go to a funeral... eventually. They even had food after the service including BBQ brisket. Yep, we must be in Texas.

That IS a lot of dough for a 1n4001. You sure don't need an HP hot carrier in THAt application.
