Title: Swingarm maintenance.
Post by: Ron_S. on May 11, 2012, 02:27:56 PM
I'm going through my very first annual maintenance on my 86 R65.  How do you get the swingarm bearings greased and be sure you got grease to the right places?  What's a tapered grease fitting/head?  I've greased a lot of farm and construction equipment and never heard of that.

You'll need a pointed greasing tip on the grease gun. Remove the black plastic covers to get to the greasing point which is in the center of the swingarm axle. It's greased when it spurts out around the swing arm axles - between the frame and swingarm.

Thanks.  I popped off that cap and the whole area inside is full of grease.  Is it supposed to be?

It keeps water from getting to the bearing .

Bought my swingarm bearing grease gun rubber pointy tip thingy at Tractor Supply. Couple bucks.

When I couldnt locate my pointy tip  I just used the traditional zerk and made sure it was square as I injected the grease.

One version:

Unfortunately the link from where I got that image is broken (requires name & password!).
But it gives you an idea of what you are looking for.

The one I personally have is much bigger & messier (IMO), but they seem to be easy to find in auto parts stores:

The first one replaces the female zerk fitting on your gun.
The second one has a male zerk to quick-connect to the gun.

I still want to find one of the first ones....
