Title: R65LS Gas Cap
Post by: wmsoller on May 03, 2012, 11:37:47 PM
I want to replace the lock cylinder in my gas cap. How do I take it apart and put back together without destroying?

If its the later cap without the bmw logo you just pull it apart or prise it apart. The part with the steel thread has a plastic insert and it clicks into the top of the cap.
Once you get in there it is easy to see how it all works.
Check the springs that push the little black plastic keys into their slots when you lock the cap. These fail and you end up with the common spinning 'I can't get the cap off' syndrome.

If this doesn't make sense I have photos.

I've got the cap with the logo. Is there a difference? Would you mind sending pics? I'm at wmsoller@yahoo.com Thanks, Bruce.

All I know is that they are different, try Snowbums site I think he has some info on gas caps there.

I have previously posted my 'fix' for the spinning gas cap, it involves replacing the black key with a selftapping screw as shown in the pics.

I know you just want to change the lock cylinder but I have never had an old style cap.

Cheers
