Hi there, anyone use exhaust wrap on their R65 headers? If so, how much do you need from the headers to muffler? Any opinions on using/needing a coat of silicon spray? Fasteners? Pictures?
And could it have any negative affects? Bike is running good, just looks like hell!
-
Just did mine.
MOTORCYCLE EXHAUST PIPE WRAP KIT 2" x 30' BLACK HEADER INSULATION DEI 010330 E-Bay. I recommend using some of the metalic muffler tape to tack down the wrap every so often so you can wrap tightly.

How about a couple pics? Did you do the crossover pipes as well? Any sealant/silicone spray used?

Craig, I have a thread going right now titled X-overectomy:

Beside removing the two crossover pipes from the headers, I'm also doing a wrap job on the headers and adding Norton Peashooter mufflers. I would question how tidy a wrap job would be on the exhaust system with the crossovers tubes in place. I believe that could end up as an exercise in frustration, IMO.
Suggest you check the JEGS website for their header wrap products.

I purchased the 1"x50' roll for $19.99 + $4.99 ship and that will be plenty to do my headers with a bunch left over. Already have some SS tie wraps in the shop. Can't speak to the silicone spray product.
Scroll down the JEGS page link and read the Usage and Overlap Guide as it provides the data needed to compute straight and curved pipe requirements.
Last item to share with you... The R65 has headers that are 35mm (approx 1 3/8") outside diameter. These relatively small diameter pipes need the one-inch wrap to achieve a nice, flat install as you make the big curve in the header's front end. The 2" wrap is "not recommended" for the 35mm pipes.

Fantastic thanks, look forward to seeing some pics. I was thinking 2" wrap, but would love to have a look!

I don't know if it will need it on your R65 or not, but it is fairly common for the engine to run leaner with exhaust wrap - in some cases you could get away with adjusting the mixture screw on the Bings. With other bikes, a main jet size change was needed. You won't really know until you do it, unless you find someone else with the same Bing carb setup and R65 powerplant as you. Depending on how you already have it adjusted, it might be OK without any tweaking.. Good luck!

2" pics, w/silicon spray Black. did front crossover, but not the back one.

Not a very good pix but the wrap turned out really nice - I used the 2" black wrap - Soaked it in a bucket of water I then did the wrap - After it was installed I use black heat resistant paint now & then to keep it fresh -

Hey Tom and jg928s4, the pics are great. Did you have to adjust the carb or change the jet for lean running? And more pics if possible please.
-
I have no experience with exhaust wrap but the theory goes that the exhaust gas temperature will be higher and therefore velocity will be higher. This improves exhaust gas scavenging from the combustion chamber helping achieve better filling for the incoming mixture.
Don't know how big the effect will be but it seems to me that it will look to the engine like a richer mixture. So if any change is needed it would be to lean the mixture settings.

I didn't change the jetting - bike ran fine & the plugs looked as they should have - I can't help on more pix's I sold the bike :'( I could have at least kept the aux fuel tanks >:(but I might have some pix's in my file - i'll look - tom

I have not made any carb adjustments. Since I have been cleaning up the bike with new carb bowl gaskets, cleaned and coated fuel tank, and exhaust wrap (sealed other possible exaust leaks with silver exhaust tape) it has been idling and starting better than ever.

I did my R100 this week - I like it. tom
