Like others, I have had problems and concerns with the R65 German-style fuses. Turn signal failures have been traced to corroded terminals on both the ceramic fuse ends and the fuse holder. Need to update.
I had been searching for an inline fuse holder that would: 1) Accept an automotive blade-style mini fuse and, 2) Have 16 AWG wire leads to match the R65s wiring. Most FLAPs offerings have been a full-sized 30amp fuse with, for my needs, a monster 12 gauge wire. Too much.
NAPA to the rescue. Part 784667 is a mini fuse holder with 16 AWG leads plus a good protective cap -on a leash- over the fuse.

Before yanking out the original fuse box, I marked position of leads and save a couple digital images. A digital camera is as important to me as is my torque wrench. Memory doesn't always serve.

I was able to maintain the R65s OEM female connectors and matched up new male spades. Crimp, solder and shrink tubing. Then a light smear of dielectric grease before installing.
Original plan was to fab or find a replacement fuse box for the new fuses. Each plan turned out to be like a piece of grizzle meat... the more I chewed on it, the bigger it got. Plan B was my best option.

The install utilized an aircraft Adel clamp, size DG4 and matching AN hardware... 'Cause I have a buncha the stuff. An existing vacant screw hole near the accessory plug provided a ready mount. Visible are both fuses and their protective covers which eliminated the need for a protective box.

One zip tie provides a bit of strain relief and helped tidy up the install. I am using ATM-7.5 amp fuses. I have less than ten bucks in the deal.

The PO of my '82 had spliced in a couple of those, although not as neatly as you did...

Thanks for the great write up Monti! Makes me want to retire to the Man Cave and do that to El Luche Libre while I have all of the body parts off. I would have never figured all of that out on my own.
And, since you don't live too far away from me, how would you feel about helping me remove a AA battery from my favorite MagLite?

Say what? Unless you be yanking my chain... unscrew both ends and knock that leaky sucker out with a dowel rod. Wal-Mart sells new ones cheap and they usually come with batteries. They have them now with LED bulbs. Way cool.
Too bad you missed the R65.org custom flashlights us lucky types scored. [smiley=thumbup.gif]
"help me remove a battery..." oy vey! :D

Phorqs, I can't even get the lazy goober to ride down here for freebies - I gotta mail 'em to him!!! Go figure...

... freebies...
Not so, old forgetful one. I bought your lunch. [smiley=beer.gif]

It would have been nice if you'd brought it... ;D

So how would Monte go about putting that in the wiki; assuming that's the sort of thing that would be good to put in it? I think it's a well written, useful, and very well illustrated article.

Goober Monte would need help/instructions, re: moving something to WiKi. My bride has threatened me with a phone call to Lorena Bobbit if I do anything outta my league on this here compuKer. SWWBO has had to totally rebuild our computer due to my efforts at "tidying up stuff". ;D
Other than that, y'all have at it. It's all good!

So happy to have found this Montmil. Lost my battery cover (doh! no zip tie!) and decided I didn't want to bother with replacements and trying to match custom paint to tank, if it weren't for that gaping hole that is the fusebox. I'll be happy to take your mod and get those things out of sight. Now for a good looking battery holder...

I've added this article to the wiki:

If your scoot has the same small fuse box as mine, the puppy is held to the frame's backbone with an OEM BMW hose clamp. Easy removal. Ugly hole gone. We talking about the same black plastic box with the two euro-trash fuses?

Here's a site that may give a few ideas on how to replace your stock fuse box.
http://www.easternbeaver.com/
The site is located in Japan, and the shipping costs and the prices in general are a bit high, but it may give you some ideas on how to do the job.

Just pulled off the 83's fuse box and, well, one picture is worth at least a couple dozen words; especially as I did not include a photo of the 81's fuse box issues.
Note the white, powdery corrosion on both fuses. The terminals in the box were relatively clean however the fuses were working hard to break the circuit.
I have two more of the NAPA Part 784667 ready for pickup.

Very clean update!

Finally getting around to this retrofit for my 79' R65 and I've very grateful to Montmil for this elegant work and documentation.
More when I get the job done.
Other projects: Dash teardown, Acewell speedo/tach install, gen-lamp relocation, resistor installation project under separate copy.

Well, Señor Morrison returns! We here in the asylum had just about completed the requirements to get your "missing kid mug shot" on a milk carton.
Glad you escaped. We couldn't raise the discounted $4.99 ransom... ::)

Glad to be back Monte! I haven't a thing to say for myself except moving to a new city, then 3 more moves, then motorcycle stolen and recovered, three jobs, no time for [gasp] riding. I'm glad to be back and having a great time on the R65 while I visit San Diego. Taking it back up the coast to SF in a few days where it'll keep me happy while I rehab my 92 R100R, sitting under a cover for 8 months.
