And speaking of paint... well, right now Bill Conquest is.

Anybody have an idea for an alternative source for the BMW 086 Avus Black paint? Black ain't just plain ol' black. Phil Hawksley's BMW site list fourteen different 'blacks' used on various BMW motorcycles. Fourteen!

Perhaps a matching from the later model automotive world?

When I repainted my '83 R65 and returned it to it's original 501 blue, my autobody supplier did their magic and found the color on a late model Honda car. Probably 150+ blacks within the car colors.

Anyone found something less than the $125.00 quart can from the dealer? Pul-eeez :(

Have you considered ordering a touch up quantity of 086 Avus Glasurit from Holt BMW in Ohio and then having it matched by a local ppg shop?  I ordered some of the azurblau for the 501 code on my 83 and it is a perfect match.  The Honda Blue is close, that's for sure, but the Glasurit is exact for touch ups.

On the other hand, a properly done paint job, and not skimping on the prep, is going to last a long long time, so what is $125 (especially these days) over 5 or 10 years?

No biggie, Steve-o. I'm spending ol' Phorqs R90 money anyways, not mine. [smiley=evil.gif]

About convinced him that "black is black" as far as his R90 project goes. I get to color and pin stripe his custom cafe fairing, then do a patina project to bring the color 'down' to match his bike's original and now vintage paint.

This is going to be a fun Springtime project... once we fab up some mounting tabs and brackets.

Sounds like fun.  I'll be curious to follow your fairing prep and painting.  My Wudo fairing is a ten footer, and will eventually need a full repaint and restripe.  The PO drilled the instrument holes off-center.  Same thing with the mounting holes, which I had to redo.  Don't drink and drill!

Interesting rear view mirrors there.  (Rear view mirror is kind of a contradiction isn't it?)  I've never seen mirrors with that kinky bend before.

I'd be interested in seeing the mounting brackets for that one.  I'm sure that I'll get to do all the elbow grease prep work and for a small emolument in the way of modified barley with ethanol Monteangelo will manage the paint gun.

Those are the standard R65 mirrors, but in black.  Perhaps it is the camera angle, but they all have that bend.  The LS mirrors are straight and much longer.  Painting while drinking, well, that's a national pastime...

The paint on a fairing takes a very different beating than a gas tank.  Take a look at the leading edge of your front fender for a preview.
