Gertie has developed a very slight leak on one of the callipers, i am in the process of rebuilding the caliper this weekend for the MOT, there was evidence of "Blue staining" on the disc which i have steam cleaned to remove any brake fluid but wonder if i should attempt to polish the disc or do the herd think that would be overkill as the new brake pads will clear it ?.

I would just break the glaze off of them and clean the holes out with a power drill and gun bore brush(s). Mainly to give your new pads a nice clean abrasive surface to seat-in and burnish with.
I've had very good luck with my replacement OEM pads after a full disc cleaning, maintenance and tune-up. Have you checked the runout on them?

I'm with Mike, 'scuff' up the surface of the rotor to get rid of the polished look .
Have you measured the thickness of the rotor ?

What would you suggest to break the glaze ? T Cut or something similar ? there is some grooving on the discs but they appear to run true. Dont think my 45/70 cleaning kit will fit the holes i will have to use one from my "Pea shooters" got some .36 pistol brushes they may do the trick.

I'm trying to remember what I used on the holes...maybe ±30 caliber brushes? I can check and get back to you. A slightly larger brush works best, they will reduce in size but it makes relatively quick work chucked into a hand drill.
For the disc I just used a stiff sanding block and 320 grit. And a comfortable seat with some chilled beverages.
One more thing, I've found new pad break-in to be very successful. I do at least 30-50 30mph to 0mph aggressive stops with the new front brakes. Making sure to allow adequate cooling after 5 or so stops. This burnishing / break-in technique seems to all but eliminate brake squeal and glazing. Light continuous braking on the front discs seems to create glazing, which creates squeal, at least with my experience.

With the buffed up brake disc, Lou, I'm sure the MOT inspector will think you've done an over-the-top overhaul of the entire front brake system.
Perhaps a few quid tucked under the front tire will speed things along? Just something por los niños is what works for Victor and I. Maybe Mike V, too. ;)

You forget this is Yorkshire where the economy is so bad we have to barter, the favoured currencys at the moment are Black Pudding or Rhubarb the Pound and Euro are way down the list although i would be alright with a few Green Backs if i had any......
