Title: which muffler to buy

I am trying to narrow down my options. I have an r65ls with the original mufflers and headers (black). My plan is to keep the headers (black) and find some  chrome mufflers - going with more of a cafe style look. I do want something louder than stock.

option 1: Shorty universals - My concern is it appears most of the universal mufflers do not have a point of attachment for the frame. Is this a concern? Has anyone done this? which mufflers should I consider.

option 2: Standard length after market.

I am having a hard time finding information about options to purchase in the USA

Finding something louder than stock won't be a problem because I doubt there is anything out there that is as quiet as stock especially if we are talking noise levels when the stock ones were new. I have a pair of stock (Zuena) and a pair of Sito's and the Zuena's are very much quieter even though one has holes in it. The extreme would probably be the short universals will be very substantially louder than stock. If you do go that way you want something to fit a 35 mm pipe.

I peeked. You, too, will find that the Cone Engineering site is aptly described in their company name. You buy the rolled, bent, cut, baffled, etc. raw pieces, then and weld them up yourself or have it done outside. Then there's the matter of paint, chrome plating them or buying stainless and taking out a second to pay the welder.

I may follow his lead. The web site shows long attach brackets that can be trimmed and/or tweaked as needed to mate up with the R65 attach points... I think.

I assisted Bengt Phorqs in fitting a Dunstall-look pair to his Bonneville and they went on just fine. Mufflers come with an adaptor that will match up with the smaller pipes on our R65s.

I have a pair of stainless Dunstall look-a-likes by EPCO on my '81. They look and sound really nice. Fortunately, I could buy them second hand. Brand new prices will bring a tear. :'(

They are really nice looking and seem to be good quality. the bike is not back together again so I don't know how they sound but another forum member said they are Loud. As monte said the have bracket and spacing collars. The company was very helpful in the ordering/shipping process. They arrived in good condition. I also ordered a set of HEL Stainless Steel brake lines from them.

The Zeuna units are pretty nice, but often not easy to find.   EPCO stainless are very good, and not cheap - but you'll likely never have to replace them ever again unless the bike is crashed.  MAC used to make some as well which were less expensive, but I don't know if they've stopped making them, or are only making small batches now - used to be easy to find, now not so much.   I think that you can still get SITO units for the R65, too?  Unfortunately, my coffee hasn't kicked in yet this morning.

Emgo reverse cones. They fit perfectly with no modifications at all. I took off the bracket and bolted them to the existing muffler mount. All told they sound pretty damn good i think. Ill try to post a video. Paid about 100.00 and picked them up so nothing for shipping.

they do look good!
I fit them to mine but had to have a baffle made cos they're just too loud!!
& i've had 3 R6 race bikes!!!

Got any other mods planned for the bike??
