Title: Side Cover Adaptation?
Post by: jg928s4 on July 12, 2011, 12:19:16 AM
I have Access to a pair of R100/7 covers, anyone have any experience substituting other covers on the R65?  Comments / Suggestions?

Bought the covers, looks like they can be adapted to work.   After I get finished with a Move I am in the middle of I will post the progress.

I'm curious as to how they will look as I've had the same thought.

They will work with some modifications, I am currently moving and will work on it in a few weeks.   I will need to cut out the current handle notch so the one side can slide up further, and drill the holes for the R65 mounting method, and then just putting double sided velcro tape on frame and panels on all sides for extra security against vibrations.    But we shall see.

Trimmed, fitted and painted (Bike will be Hot Rod Black).  Will post pictures when mounted. Can you tell where material removed?

Rather than going through all that work, perhaps someone out there in Airhead land would be willing to trade his R65 covers for your R100/7 covers. Seems like a shame to hack these all up if there's someone out there in need.

Nice job.  Looks like you have reduced the overall height by trimming off the top section.

I think this is great as it seems the covers for the bigger bikes are more plentiful and I actually l8ike the looks of them better.

Good lord! This is so cool I may have to try it just for fun. Hello eBay.

Although I don't have any on either of my R65s, I wonder what the side panel R65 stickers would look like on these extended bits...

The triangular shaped covers attach differently then the 650s. On the back side of the rear frame tube (subframe tubes in front and back of the sidecover) are two tabs that retain the triangular style. Since the 650s don't have those, you'll need to devise another way to retain them - possibly drill some small holes and zip tie in a couple places. But the zip ties would be visible. You might be right - industrial velcro could work very well on the back side, and use the rubber band/bungy in the front. That just might work perfectly.

Just returned from a surfin' safari on eBay for these Big-R-series side covers. A whole bunch out there for sale. None cheap.  [smiley=cry.gif]
