Title: Are r 65 cylinders the same
Post by: thessler on February 07, 2012, 09:22:42 AM
Hi
I need a new piston, and the cylinder has quite a few nicks in it from the valve bouncing around in it. I may or may not be able to hone them out.

There is a set of jugs and pistons on E bay from a 79, and i'm wondering will they be a match for an 84. Guyclaims they have 26k on them, not sure about that but they look good.

I already bought a head with the wrong valves and I don't want to repeat that performance.

 Any info apreciated, Thanks Tom

Unless his 79 was upgraded, it'll have the cast iron cylinders. Yours has nikasils, and that's the way to go. Right around 81 a whole bunch of improvements were made to these bikes on every front - transmission, engine, brakes, suspension - you name it. One of those was nikasils.

I recently posted a list of all the differences between the 78-80 models and the 81-84's. Should be useful for anyone new to R65's to be aware of what parts are not interchangeable.  It's only a first draft and I would still appreciate any feedback on corrections or additions.
