Title: Tough Chassis paint

When I repaired my centre stand a couple of years back it got painted with what was on the shelf - standard automotive rattle can black.

The cross tube in particular has not remotely stood up to the road grit blasting it gets. Anybody tried some of the tougher paints like POR-15 or for the Brits Hammerite smooth on the centre stand with better long term results and if so spray or brush.?

I use the POR-15 Chassis black paint on my bikes - it is pretty tough, I think.   You can put it on with a brush, and it will smooth out on its own if you give it time.   It is too thick to spray from an airspray gun without cutting it down.

I had my frame and all black parts powder coated about a year ago.  So far I am really pleased with how it is standing up.

I used POR-15 for the underside skid plates on my off-road truck.  That stuff is tough.  Be careful not to get it on anything you don't want it on.

I have used Rustoleum Epoxy paint made for appliances on some parts and it is way more tougher and goes on thicker than any regular rattle can paint.  It is available at Home Depot here in Canada and USA but not sure of England.  Of course the best is powder coating as others have said.  Just my 2 cents.

You can try truck bed liner spray. It goes on thick and is pretty tough.

Thanks for the ideas. For the centre stand I think I'm convinced to try brush applied POR 15 although it's not easy stuff to buy in the UK - only 2 suppliers that I can see.

I f you get the POR 15 and don't use the whole can, be sure to put some plastic wrap over the top of the can before you put the lid back on.  Otherwise, any residue on the can top will seal the lid back on and you may not be able to get it off again.
