Title: Ex Danish Army R65GS
Post by: airhead_martin on January 18, 2012, 09:03:43 AM
Just purchased this ex danish army bike, has anybody had experience with these, it seems ok only rode it round the block. Exaust system requires attention as do front forks/ suspension.

Cheers Martin

Welcome to the herd, Martin.

A wee bit more info regarding the R65GS would be helpful. Year of manufacture, twin or mono, differences from civilian model... and a photo means the bike actually exists. We all love pics of our favorite Airhead.

Ball back in your court [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

There are some adventurous fellows from your own country who are presently riding 3 of these rare beasties to the southern tip of South America as we speak!

Bob and his friends are updating a weblog of their journey too:

I'm sure that they can give you all sorts of advice, especially once they return home!

Welcome Martin. When you have done a few posts you will be able to post pictures.... parts new/ second hand are not a problem try eBay, if you look through the technical FAQ section you will see that many subjects are covered if in doubt just ask. Motorworks are in Meltham not a million miles from you i used to call in for my parts having pre ordered them and found the staff very helpfull.
good luck with the bike.

Bike details - It would apear to be a 92 bike according to my registration documents and what I can glean from the Danish paperwork.
I am hoping that it is the higher output version as it has big cv carbs fitted.
It is of course a monolever rear end, as to the comparison between it and the civilian version, I don't have any real data on either machine.
I have haynes manuals but there is no reference to the R65GS so I'm assuming R80gs ref for the frame and cycle parts and any R65 engine refs.
If anybody knows of some R65 or R65GS book/manual it would be useful.
Just to put you in the picture this is the seventh beemer I've owned, previously R80 ex Police, R100R, R100GS, R75/7, R80GS and an R100T.

If it's a 92 I don't think they ever did a low output engine for the mono bikes so it should be the low compression 48HP engine which is probably the best of the lot having peak torque much lower down in the rev range than the pre-86 bikes. Perfect for a GS.

We have earlier manuals for the R65's but not for the mono levers although there are a few members here with mono bikes.  Haynes covers the normal mono R65's pretty well and as far as cycle parts are concerned it was just and R80 with an R65 engine. I doubt you'll have any insurmountable problems.

:-O i wanted one of those!

Difazos had a couple not long before they closed for good. I nearly bought one but got the R1100GS... oh how i wish i saved some cash and had a Mono GS to go with mr normal mono.
From what i know they are just R80GS with the R65 engine.
as im sure you already know

Motorworks,
Motobins
and James Sherlock
are the three Uk parts people.
I find James best if you want something cheap- they also have laods of second hand parts, and James is always very helpful.
Motorworks are great for upgrades and more unusual new parts.
and i dont really use Motobins to much.

anyway good luck and if you ever want to sell it let me know!! lol
