Title: Spoke wheel help............PLEASE!!
Post by: MR.E on January 08, 2012, 04:42:00 PM
Hello

I've not been on here for some time, with moving house, the buy out at work & the mrs ready to drop any day!!!

BUT i'm stumped with the bike!
i've been playing with it & picked up some spoked wheels, so i had them re painted & spoked, in my excitement i ran home and fit them straight away BUT theres a problem!
The rear wheel has about half a centimeter of play in it, it turns fine but has side to side play, i've tried to fix it by switching the internals round but no joy, at one point the wheel didn't turn at all!!

Any clue on what to do??
any help welcome.

Thanks in advance

Can't tell what year bike you have, is it a twn  shock, or mono shock bike ?

twin shock 1981, think the wheels are from a 1985 model - so the seller said!!

thanks

Can you post a photo of the assembly?

Is this a wheel for an R65? What hub? Can you provide some additional mechanical details?

It would be difficult to provide any diagnosis of the problem or offer assistance without complete details.

Back to you Mr.E :)

yep no worries, but where would i find the hub details, are they on a sticker??
The wheel is to go into my '81 R65.

I'll get a photo up tomorrow now.

thanks

If the wheels are from an '85 model year bike,  most likely it's from a mono shock bike .

We need to see a photo or two before we can go any further here .

Okay, a couple of clarifiers.
1) If the wheel was indeed a monoshocker, there would be no way to even attempt to make it fit to notice the play.
2) early 85 model R65s were twinshocks.
3) any wheel from the rear of any Twinshock BMW twin from 74-84 will interchange providing the correct shoes are installed for the brakes.
4) the front is a whole different ball of wax. Basically if you have a FRONT hub with 4 ribs, yer hosed. also that wheel with 4 ribs would be a 19" rim, your bike was designed for a 18" wheel.
BMW did in fact make the correct 18" spoke wheel for the bike, but they are as rare as hens teeth.
I suspect that the play in the rear is involved with the bearings and spacers in the rear.
My question is, if the bearing are bad in the rear hub, how did the wheel builder builder actually lace and true the rim?

Exactly what wirewrkr said!

I have heard of a 19" front working just fine, but it has to be from an R80ST - not exactly a common bird these days either.

There rear must have a bearing issue. Better get someone knowledgeable to eyeball it!

Now then

Thanks for the response.
as far as i'm aware it can come down to a shim used in the bearing set up, not sure how he trued the wheel thinking about it, i'll check it when it's on the bike properly!!

The front fits fine & is an 18" rim, discs bolted straight on to it & slid it in no bother at all.

i think I'll order a whole new bearing set up to see what can be done.

cheers

I trued my rear wheel on the bike.

I clamped the square to the rear-set carrier, noting the required offset of the original wheel and trued the new wheel the same before I put the tyre on.

And yes I am running a 19inch St wheel on the front.

incase any of you were wondering i did get this sorted, but we've had a little stumbling block so haven't been working on the bike!!

Anyway it did come down the spacer between the bearings, it had to be absolutely perfect, BMW told me all the sizes possible so i lathed them out and started from the nearest in my wheel!
Got it eventually!

All the best lads

Glad to hear it worked out well - we were a bit confused not knowing the mfgr year at first!   Post up a pic of your bike when you can!

Not quite sure what the bike will look like when ive finished, but need to adjust the rear mudguard & make a new seat for it

Well that's an interesting personalization of an R65!
Looks pretty good - over here we'd say it looks like a "Bobber"   You've definitely made the tail end/mudguard area look trim and neat.  What have you used for the rear fender?  What is that for a tire on the front?

It is always interesting to see how different people make these bikes fit their vision.

Looking great! I like it!

A LOT!

I think it looks more like a scrambler than a bobber. High pipes and you'd have it!

The seat looks fine to me. BTW, where is the rear fender from?

What's the plan for a front fender?

thanks
don't know what i'd call it though!!!
With the seat i want to make a new seat base going all the way back to the rear hoop and keep the thickness the same as is now.

I've removed all the BMW switch gear & fit the choke to the airbox.
Love the look of naked bars!

front mudguard has had me stumped for a while now, am thinking of a high fender - similar to a scrambler i guess

Rear is from an rd450 but thinking of swapping that too, might go for a full rear chrome mudguard - starting at the battery - and sticking about 1inch off the tyre, not too sure though!

Nice looking R65, it has attitude! Those silencers look like the ones I ordered from FlatTrackRacer.com to use on mine, How do they sound? D2

Thanks
The exhausts were given to me from a mate for £30/ pair!
but they were LOUD, so i had a baffle made & there loud now but it's like modern enduro bike loud, so i like it and at low revs on quiet roads i love the burble it puts out!!

Where did you source the exhaust bandage?

My standard front headers are currently painted black I am constantly having to recoat them.  But I do fancy the taped up racer look.

I am toying with the idea of refreshing my bike and making a few changes.  The frame, subframe and swingarm needs to lose the disappointing powder coat and then needs to be repainted and I still need to repair the tank where the side stand collapsed and it fell against some push bikes.

But the main change I need to make is with the transmission side of things, with the old lurch on take-up when you let the clutch out when pulling away.  Might even install a Trail-tech instrument cluster.

But it is going to have to join a long queue.  I have two classic wooden sailing dinghies that are in front (1959 Merlin Rocket and a 1948 National 12) and a VW T25/T3 Camper Van which needs painting (with a roller), etc.  And a house and a Familly.  It will be next year before I get near it.

Rev,

got the tape on eBay, £15 got enough left to tape it again, which is good cos i caught part on a wall & ripped it!!

Sounds like you got enough on at the moment!!

All the best

I like the way you have kinked up the rear sub frame loop on the old mudgaurd.  But you will have to reposition it to support the new one, otherwise it will wobble about.  The mudguard is positioned correctly as it follows the wheel in a concentric manner if you get my drift.

However - you might find it too long when you hang a light and a mudguard off it.  The ali will fatigue unless some extra support is found - look at a BSA Gold star rear mudguard - there are some braces either side to stop it breaking off!

If I add a picture of an earlier incarnation of my bike where I had a long mudguard fixed to the subframe loop you will understand.

I have since shortend it, but I might re-instate the subframe loop, or at least part of it, to stiffen it all up at the back and kick it up like you have.

These aluminium blade mudguard are not very strong. Add a light and a number plate and it will soon be gone.

I'm gonna put the stop light on the rear of the kinked hoop,
I've made a bracket to fasten it to it & the mudguard will fasten to the bottom of the lights bracket & still attach to the 2 nubs on the swingarm (under battery tray).
But i'm thinking of some long stays - a little like the triumps use on the front mudguards.

Thanks
