Title: What is This
Post by: leswaller on January 17, 2012, 08:07:37 AM
My recently acquired r60/5 project came with a box of bits amongst which is the item shown. I cant work out what it is. Can anyone tell me what it does, where it goes and how it is attached. Thanks
Cant seem to upload the picture so I will try and describe it/ It is made of polished thick steel wire (or thin rod) about three inches long and is shaped like a fish hook with a small loop in each end. Might be some kind of cable support but I cant find it on the parts fiches
Regards
Les

Might be a ground wire for the seat to the frame?

Does sound like a cable stay of some sort.

Regarding the photo... Do you have access to one of the free, web-based photo storage sites, such as Photobucket? Store your pics in albums and later easily post to this and other forums, etc. Check it out.  [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Definitely a cable guide, I have a similar one at the front of the frame, holds the throttle cable and maybe the clutch cable depending on your routing.  I'm not home now but if necessary I could get a picture eventually.

Thanks. Anything to locate it would be helpful

I'm with Matt. Most likely crafted by a PO rather than an OEM part.

Small loop might be captured by an existing bolt 'somewhere' on the chassis and not necessarily in public view. Since the entire fish hook is flat, whatever cable/s or wire loom captured would maybe rest on the center-bottom of the big loop, or...

Ooh Ooh! Idea... Might it be a helmet chin strap hook?

Does it look home made? It could a tool of sorts, did you ever see a tool used to tighten laces on ice skates? That's what it reminded me off hence the home made motorcycle adaptation.

It doesnt look homemade at all. The thing is not all in the same plane, the small ring/hook is at 90 degrees to the rest of the article.
I did wonder if it was some kind of cable holder, as used to keep front brake cables from rubbing against mudguards, but there is no obvious place to mount it apart from drilling a hole in the mudguard and I sure that if BMW intended it to be mounted in this way then they would have supplied the mudguard with a hole already in it.

On R60/5 Micro fiche I find two possibilities, The first 32-0757 for Clutch Cable/Brakes is #6  32731230976"Bracket" the second is on 11-1734 Engine Ventilation #3, 11141337171 "Wire Strap" They don't look exactly like yours but maybe close? D2

Dave 2 - you are a star! I am pretty certain it is 32731230976"Bracket". All I have to do now is work out where it is supposed to fit. The fiche doesn't help and cant find it in either Haynes or Clymer

Totally forgot about this last night... will send myself a reminder to take a picture tonight and post it.  But on my '86 R65, it is positioned under the tank, near the round rubber bumper the tank sits on, on the driver's right hand side.
