Getting ready to install R90S clock and voltmeter, with original wiring loom, into my Wudo R65 version of a R90S fairing. You know, smaller headlight opening, dash is integral. Any suggestions about the best, and for me, easiest, way to hook up the wiring? Seems like it should just plug in to existing points, but there are always a couple of ways to do these things and I don't want to short out my entire electrical system. When a voltmeter is installed does that turn off the generator light, or will they both work? I would like them to both be functional.
Thanks.

There should be one or two unused two wire connectors in the area of the instrument housing .
The wires are green with a black spiral band .
There are meant for clock and voltmeter use .

I'm not 100% certain before I've finished my morning coffee, but I think that the spare connector behind the headlight&under the instruments (green with black stripe) is switched power. This is what you want for the voltmeter - don't want voltmeter on with ignition switch off. But you DO want the clock to have power all the time.
-
So the green/black connection is for the voltmeter, which is switched power, and another connection, which is connected to the battery and always on is for the clock? Makes sense. I'll guess the lights to both are connected to the switched power.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks

I would check them, to see if they are switched power or not, don't have a wiring diagram handy at work right now, that shows these wires .
-
If in doubt I think it's ok just to connect your voltmeter to the coil terminal which has a green/black lead.
-
Looking at the wiring diagram in my Haynes manual, it does its best to cause confusion by showing both several switched power as well as always hot lines as green with black stripe. The special accessory connector intended to be used with the voltmeter (generally tucked behind the headlight&under the dash panel) is shown with the green/black stripe. And also, a hot power line coming directly from the fuse panel is also the same color code.
Do you own a multimeter?

I'll be diving in on the wiring tomorrow and will keep you all posted. I've looked at the wiring diagrams in my Clymers and I'm not sure what is meant by under the dash panel as everything seems to plug into either the tach or the speedo and headlight shell has a thick covered bundle. Isn't the accessory block under the tank?
We'll see...

Steve - the spare connector which we are talking about is literally, about a ~3 inch long wire with a black colored rectangular plastic terminal on the end of it which is sticking out of the end of the wiring harness underneath the instruments. It may well be tucked in the black plastic housing or under the dash panel that is between the speedo and tach. This is where it is located on the R65LS, but one has to take off alot more plastic to uncover it on that bike. The wiring harnesses should be the same as from the factory, unless some previous owner has been mucking about in there..
-
I the main wire harness essentially splits at the dash panel. The main harness is fastened to the back of the panel by two metal tags that fold over the harness. The divided harness after that goes off to left and right handlebar controls, tach and speedo the headlight housing. I hope these photos help. D2

I see, I think, the green switched wire in the middle of the photos...sitting doing 'nothin" with a cover over it? I hooked up a voltmeter to this connector and it has worked for over 3 years now at least. In the manual it was described as number 48...voltmeter accessory. I used a really cheap car voltmeter and attached it to the engine bar on the left side and tilted it up so I could keep an eye on my new 400 watt upgraded alternator!!

You are right, Sue, it is right there at about 5-oclock position from the rear of the tachometer. Good eyesight, Sue, and helpful pics, Dave!

Wow. Thanks all!

"5-o'clock position" if sitting on the bike; seven-ish if you're up at the front tire.
Red One to Red Mike. Bandits at your three... or is it nine? Red Mike, Red Mike... bail out! Sorry, mate.
W-a-y too much caffeine for me this morning. [smiley=beehive.gif]

"...must have been alot of business at the local funeral homes lately."
There has been. They be droppin' like flies 'round here, Mike. Seems the holiday season is good biz for the funeral peeps. Coffee pot has been dry by the time I get there; plus there's nothing but sugar crumbs in the donut box. Pitiful, it is. ;D
