Title: Extra wrench?
Post by: Ron_S. on November 29, 2011, 01:22:45 PM
I recall reading, but not writing down, that I should carry an extra wrench, either a 7mm or 8mm (I think), with my tool kit.  Any advice?

They're small box/open end wrenches, Ron. Carry both and see which one gets used the most.

Don't overlook the main frame top tube for storage space. It's open at the fuel tank bail. I have a Kathy's Creations Tube Stash designed for the space and it's ab fab. Kind of an Easy Rider hide out.

Also have Kathy's tool roll pouch that fits in the tail piece.

Whoa! This could be the start of a great "tool kit" thread. ::)

The original tool kit had a 7 x 8.  The only use I can think of is for the lock-nuts on the throttle/choke cable adjusters.

Can't off hand think of anything that's 7mm. On mine the choke cable adjuster lock nuts are 8mm and throttle cable lock nuts are 10mm.

I have an extra 8mm wrench, some sockets&driver, and some other assorted metric Allen wrenches stashed in my KAthy's Tube Stash - it is a handy product/idea!!

You need a pair of 12mm wrenches (I think) to adjust the valves but I think the stock kit came with two...

My suggestion, is to perform your usual maintenance with the provided tool kit, then see what you may need in extra tools .

About the only items I've added is feeler gauges to set valves, spark plug gap and if your bike has a points type ignition, feeler gauge for the points gap .

Ron S. - if your bike came with the original tool kit, it should have a 7 x 8mm open-end spanner.  It will be the smallest of the lot.

The other important tool is the 10 x 12mm ring spanner.  You will need that any time you disconnect the drive shaft from the gearbox.

Is this the original tool kit we are talking about?

Seem to think that I use two 10mm wrenches a lot on LRB for various nuts and their corresponding bolts. Battery connections need 2 of 'em. Carry both as sockets too. Ah, let's face it, I'm a rolling garage! Most used sizes on the LS are the 13mm, 17mm and the 10mm. And the magnetic pencil stick!!! Boy, those nuts sure get into the most difficult spots or just simply disappear until you're walking around barefoot some day. They love to hide under the tires when LRB is on the centrestand! ::)

The OEM toolkit that came with our bikes gets to travel all the time with my other bikes too...it is the best! And yes it was on board in Sask. when that bike got burned up but luckily was in the one sidecase that rolled away from the fire. LRB would have been royally steamed to lose his kit! >:(
